So I checked my windshield washer today and nothing happened. Back home I fired up the Durametric. I could turn on the headlight's washer but when I selected the windshield washer, all I heard was a click. Like a relay being energized.
1) I'm assuming there are two pumps (
headlights
/ windshield) or is there one pump and a solenoid valve to direct the washer fluid?
2) I see a fuse for the
headlights
washer but nothing for the windshield. Any idea which fuse I need to check?
Has anyone else had a failure of this washer?
Thanks!
I think I remember seeing someone with a failed pump, and he cracked it open and took pictures of the inside. It was a mess as water got in, it was rusted, etc. It's not a common problem reported here, but I guess it can happen.
EDIT: Here's the thread I remembered
I found my windshield washer leak - it's the pump -...
Thanks for the info.
My 6 month service comes up in July. This will be wheels off so I plan to check for voltage at the motor. If voltage is there, I will be getting a new pump from RockAuto. Since this isn't my daily driver, it can stay up on jack stands while waiting on the pump.
Like the people in the article you listed, I can't remember the last time I used the washer. Probably should check it once in a while if nothing else to add new fluid in the reservoir.
It was the washer pump assembly. Looks like the fluid was leaking by the pump and got into the motor. Motor was locked up with rust. Probably should run the washer every couple of months to keep the seal lubricated.
Thanks for tearing down, posting pictures, and reporting back! And I'm glad it was an easy-to-find issue. Looks like this may be a little more common than I thought!
How hard was it to get at that stuff? Mine hasn’t worked for years, but I was intimidated by the project, so haven’t done it.
Not hard at all. I believe there is a YouTube video about it. Be sure to replace the right pump as there are two of them. We should all cycle both pumps every now and then. I cycle mine when I know the car is going to be washed. Let them run for several minutes.
Your car has two separate pumps, one for the windshield and one for the headlights. Since the headlight washer works, the reservoir is fine and the relay click means power is getting there. Check the fuse in the front fuse panel (same area as the wipers) for the windshield pump. If the fuse is good, the windshield washer pump itself has likely failed and needs replacement.
