Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If I was you I would start with replacing the backboxes first.

Suggestion
If this is not enough then you could look into headers and higher flowing cats, however if you replace either of these then you will most likely need to recalibrate the mapping of the car.

These cars will never be wailing banshees until maybe you start to change turbos or remove catylists etc.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there,
Recently acquired an early turbo MT, live in Europe.
As many before me, not blown away about the stock Dyson like noises coming from the rear end.
Am aware that there are numerous threads on this matter since the car is over 25 years old now.
However, what was available back then has often unfortunately disappeared in 2025.
Looking for options to stimulate more good noises, less Dyson and definately no fan of highway droning.
Should I be looking at just backboxes, maybe headers or race-cats or a combination?
Especially pointers towards the brands that both work well AND are still on the market these days will be most helpful, thanks!
I'm following this as I'll be looking at an exhaust upgrade potentially sometime next year. I read through the forum and was initially interested in Akrapovic Slip On but they don't sell it anymore.
Number 1 on my list currently is a Kleine Turbo Exhaust although I haven't heard it in person.
As easy it is to find OEM parts, aftermarket stuff is a lot more challenging.
FVD is still around, but not sure what I should be looking for to start with.
Not looking for performance gains perse, just a little bit more "presence" and less Dyson.
I’m not up to speed on what may be out there on the market currently. Back in the day I had a 996 turbo and through a colleague I got a RUF rear silencer box for it at a decent price. It sounded pretty good I seem to remember, not in your face, no drone. These cars will never be wailing banshees until maybe you start to change turbos or remove catylists etc. The RUF was reassuringly expensive and retailed for about €4k IIRC.
It was essentially a modified stock rear box, opened up, modified and welded back up and a RUF part number stuck on it. My point is this may be a route to try if you’re not going the whole 700bhp modding route and just want a nice OEM + type upgrade, there are folks out there that have done this to their cars and we have a guy in the UK who drives around doing these sort of mods at peoples homes.
Found an old picture , wonder where this car is now
@NINENINESIX
depends on your budget but
M&M Exhaust
are well regarded when it comes to aftermarket Porsche exhausts (
FVD Brombacher
are one of their main distributors).
Other reputable exhaust manufacturers (who still produce exhaust systems for the 996 Turbo platform) include the likes of
Supersprint
,
Kline
and
Cargraphic
.
Topgear
also make an aftermarket system for the 996 Turbo and are considered to be a more affordable brand (although I am not sure on whether their systems are designed to last).

I have a Kline exhaust with sports cats on my 996 Turbo and am very happy with it. It's all very nice quality and the welds are particularly well done. It will 'drone' if you're at low revs in 6th and try to accelerate hard from 2k revs without dropping a gear, but who on earth would drive live that......
. Driven with the correct level of care and attention, the car makes a nice deep noise and really barks when you put your foot in at over 4k revs.
It's a yes from me!
