Meanwhile I had triple checked, even called the OPC, to verify that yes, this is a part on every C4.

Suggestion

I’ve lost faith in Indies over the last few months, either mis diagnosis or unable to find a problem, also saying they have changed an item when clearly haven’t, just a money grab in a lot of cases, I can’t comment in your case but I would certainly be checking with the boss.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I am trying to wrap my head around a situation with my local Porsche indie garage, I thought I'd ask more experienced members here for their thoughts, because after all I am only a YouTube mechanic. I am in the process of changing my car's suspension. It's a .2 C4, so I preferred not to tackle the front myself. It's a full replacement, so top mounts, struts, coffin arms, Tuning forks, ARB, drop links, and inner and outer CV boots. Immediately some things felt off, like handing the guy the pair of Koni shocks (in a red Koni box) and him asking if these are the coffin arms, or trying to put the H&R springs on top of the shocks without the concave washer that a C4 has... Anyways maybe he hasn't had his coffee I thought. We go through the parts together, and he asks me how the angular bearing and compensation plate go together, they don't seem to fit. I explain there's a metal support plate (99634352300) that is already on the car that he will have to transfer over. He says he's done loads of C4s and he's pretty sure there's no such support ring. We agree he will call me back at the end of the day so I can order the support rings if they're not on the car when he has the suspension off. Sure enough, he calls me later to tell me to order them. Meanwhile I had triple checked, even called the OPC, to verify that yes, this is a part on every C4. Anyways, I order them. A few days pass, and long story short get a call with the following news: - He admitted the support rings were there, but we couldn't see them because they were so corroded, and he would've asked me to order them anyway because of the corrosion - The wheel hub was cracked, as in, pre-existing crack, and was sent off for welding. - The concave washer was also cracked, again, as in pre-existing, and was sent off for welding (this one I had to approve welding or let it be cracked). - The abs sensor wire harness was nicked so a new one was ordered and fitted, £130 for the part plus one hour labour. All in all this comes out to a bit over £500 on top of the original quote for jobs that I wasn't aware and cannot confirm needed doing before the car went in. Garage is owned by an older mechanic but most of the work is done by a younger chap, today I can go in and have a chat with the boss. I now have a choice between a) Paying for the front, saying nothing, and doing the rear myself/taking it elsewhere b) Kicking up a fuss if the above series of unfortunate events considered together are a bit too unlikely c) letting them do the rear suspension and pray it goes well. I guess what I'm asking is not if the extra repairs were done, I'm pretty certain they were (not having seen the car yet), but how likely it is that there were 2x cracks and a damaged ABS wire harness. The car had some minor suspension work done 6 years ago by a very reputable SW indie. If I got a call saying "listen, this is not coming off unless I apply extra force, it might crack the hub/the concave washer, are you OK with this?" or at least "I had to do this to get it off, sorry", I would've likely be OK with it, it's the fact that this was presented to me (and I triple asked for clarity) as if the cracks were already there and had been for a while. Any thoughts?

POST 2Original post

I'd be having a word with the topman initially and get his perspective, on a friendly note at first and tell him what you're thinking. May be worth discussing you are looking to get the rear done but your reservations about using them remain.... you may get the rear done at a discounted rate.

POST 3Original post

When you say cracked hub, do you mean hub or hub carrier? Either way - don't think I'd want a critical load bearing component on my car welded up.

POST 4Original post

follow skooshs lead on this one - best approach in my mind

POST 5Original post

"If I got a call saying "listen, this is not coming off unless I apply extra force, it might crack the hub/the concave washer, are you OK with this?" or at least "I had to do this to get it off, sorry" " This is what I'd expect from someone with integrity and experience , it covers them as well and a quick photo sent to your phone or even a Facetime with you to show you the issue ...I'd be really p***ed off if I collected my car in that state , sounds like you suspect they did the damage and as Alex says , what do they mean by cracked hub? This is why I do everything on our family cars that I can.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks gents, in the end I was satisfied enough to get them to do the rear, but just about, and in consideration of how much of a faff it would be to not have them do it. Would probably mean driving the car again in mid June if not later. Boss geezer took time to discuss things done plus other possible works on the car which I'm grateful for, but when I asked him so did the [other mechanic] crack the hub and the concave washer or were they cracked already he said he didn't know. He did say he's never seen a cracked hub though. It feels like you're between a rock and a hard place in and around London and south of it honestly, the places with better customer service etc. are out of touch with their prices as they're happy to cater to finance guys who have long lost the concept of a fair price. Some may not agree but charging e.g. £160+VAT p.h. to work on cars is objectively ridiculous.
