Fancying a challenge, I agreed to buy it without really inspecting the issues.

I think my preference would be for a rebuilt engine to go in, to add a bit of peace of mind compared to an unknown used engine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New to the forum so thought I'd introduce my project, this lovely early 996 Carrera 4 tiptronic It is currently in a bit of a sorry state. I bought it off FB marketplace, listed with undiagnosed (but severe) engine issues. Fancying a challenge, I agreed to buy it without really inspecting the issues. I feared the worst, and it came true. It was a fully seized engine that won't manually turn. It was my hunt for a replacement engine that led me here, and I hope to keep this thread updated with progress as I get this beauty back on the road!

POST 2Original post

welcome to the site goodluck with this adventure

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the warm welcome. Hoping to be able to look fondly back at these initial pictures when she's back to her best. A bit tatty in the inside but nice paperwork and provenance makes it a good base for a project. I'm not very skilled with the tools so will be relying on local specialists, but one thing I will be doing is giving the interior a good going over!

POST 5Original post

Welcome - looking forward to seeing your progress. These cars are great to work on and lots of experience on this forum - so get stuck in!

POST 6Original post

Good luck, as a fellow Arctic silver 996 owner, i'll be subscribing and watching with interest. Did you see the advert on here for a 3.4L engine for sale recently or are you planning on going bigger..?

POST 7Original post

Hello from a fellow newbie Carrera 4 Cab project owner. Some great people on here to help you self diagnose and fix problems.

POST 8Original post

Hi & Welcome.......you've come to the right place!!

It was finding that engine thread through a google search that brought me here. Ringing the chap this afternoon, sounds ideal. I was originally on the hunt for a mint widebody 996 C4S and this was a spur of the moment purchase, so not entirely sure what the long term plan is but I'm already attached to it - and I've yet to drive it!

POST 10Original post

Welcome!! Fellow 996 3.4 C4 cab owner and following with interest. Dare i ask how cheap you were able to pick it up for with a duff engine? Its been mentioned previously in other threads whether its worth spending out on a rebuild for some of the earlier cars. Will you be going for a direct replacement engine or taking the opportunity to try something different? seen owners in the US have fitted LS motors successfully and i think there have been a couple of Audi engine swaps as well.

I think my preference would be for a rebuilt engine to go in, to add a bit of peace of mind compared to an unknown used engine. I'd seen those LS engine swaps, and they are rather tempting. I'm yet to ask the local garage whether they'd be brave enough to undertake that sort of swap! I got it for a fair price given the amount of work that it needs, albeit with good provenance. Put it this way, it was less than the cost of a new aerokit lol

POST 12Original post

Welcome to the forum, I wish you the best in your endeavours. I have read where in at least one case where an LS conversion suffered engine failure relative to oil starvation under acceleration, the suggestion was that as the engine when fitted in a Porsche is facing the opposite direction the oil would tend to be forced away from the oil pump pickup..? Apparently there are a few different sumps available for the LS series engines, perhaps oil pump mods more suited to the Porsche install....? Good luck in your choices.

Someone is selling a 996 engine in the classifieds

POST 15Original post

welcome to the site and to 911 ownership, before you pull the trigger on another engine are you not going to strip it down and see if it's repairable or diagnose the problem. I wouldn't write it off until you know.
