Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking to purchase a 2005-2007 997 Carrera (6 speed manual) as a daily driver. I have found a couple of 05's on line with Carfax reports which indicate "transmission removed for repair". These cars have <40k miles and one car had "transmission removed for repair" at 14k miles and again at 20k miles. I also found an owner review on Edmunds which stated his car had an "unreliable transmission" The Rennlist forum has several threads regarding transmission/clutch problems. Are they really that bad? Should I consider another model year?

POST 2Original post

There are some short commings to the 996 and 997 transmissions (the 997 unit is better) but the major issues with them are usually user related. I purchased my 996 with 50K miles on it and at the time 2nd gear was a little dodgy so I had some transmission work done by a excellent re-builder in Colorado. The simple explaination is that he replaced the brass parts in it with steel ones. Ever since then it has been fantastic. The clutch disk is a little thin for these cars in my opinion but it can last a respectible amount of miles as long as the driver is an adult about it (burnouts are verboten). The 997 is an unbelievable car and it will take care of you as long as you take care of it.

POST 3Original post

transmissions are removed to repair clutches and rear mains too. sometimes that can show up on a carfax
