The PIWIS gets used for pretty much everything on my 996 and Cayenne....it was vital in my Tiptronic to manual swap.

I am also amazed at how extensive the Foxwell software is, from checking modules to diagnostics, activations and clearing codes.

I also had some issue with monitoring Tiptronic temperature (for ATF oil change).

The icarsoft is awesome for plugging in and diagnosing things quickly on the surface, I used it yesterday to reset the oil change reminder after changing the oil in my Cayenne.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've seen various types of scanners / code clearing devices, ie, Durametric, handhelds like the icarsoft, and even devices that use a phone app. Are there any other major differences between them? Do any of them have features that advantage??? Thanks
I have icarsoft PORII, Durametric and PIWIS II.

Hardy ever use the Durametric since I got the PIWIS and actually consider selling....

Does the PIWIS II still just have a cable that connects to a windows device that you must download the program? If so what is the advantage over the DuraMetric?
PIWIS is much more complicated than any other tool out there, it's what the dealer uses. PIWIS can do things that no other tool can.
Durametric is great for engine diagnostics, weak for everything else. Unlikely Dura will be updated to fix any 996 limitations.
Cobb needs to be matched to the particular car model. If you have a 996TT you need a Cobb for the 996TT. I don't think Cobb make a tuner for the NA 996 as their focus is on turbo cars. Again very powerful for engine logging - better then Durametric for sure - not very useful for anything else.
Foxwell and Icarsoft are other choices. I haven't used those so I can't speak to their features.
Just wondering if anyone is using those Autel scanners? Yep, they cost about 1k or so but sometimes there's some value in simplicity. Durametric, Piwis etc require laptop so they are good for doing in depth diagnostics but I wouldn't mind if there's a plug and play solution with easy to use graphical interface esp if you have another car(s) as well.
I have a foxwell scanner. Truth is, I've not needed it yet. That being said, when I first got it, I plugged it in and was surprised by all it could do. Specifically, the diagnostics. For example, I was able to turn on each electric cooling fan individually - the 2 front ones and the rear deck lid one. This would be useful to confirm operation of the motor themselves, not any of the controls. I did a gauge test to confirm the gauges were all functional. There were lots more. Hopefully I never need it. For a couple hundred dollars, I thought it was worth it, especially since it can read ODBII from any car also.
I have an inexpensive OBDII scanner that I keep in the door pocket. Good for a quick check and reset if something pops up. I also have Durametric and a Foxwell scanner with the Porsche software (and BMW/Mini software). I am also amazed at how extensive the Foxwell software is, from checking modules to diagnostics, activations and clearing codes. For instance, plugged into the Mini it checks 36 separate modules for faults, then resets all of the modules. It can do the service checks and resets as well. Doesn't Porsche PIWISII software require a subscription as licensed software from Porsche? I've heard or read that the subscription is like $25K per year which is why, mostly, only the dealers have it.
I have Durametric and Launch x431 (I've seen this scanner discussed much more in the Cayenne forumn). The version of launch i got is also about $1,000 but it works with all brands of cars and trucks and can do clearing codes, programming, and activation. I'm not sure how Foxwell and others do their updates but the biggest downside to launch is they charge you $500 or so to update the tablet for newer releases of autos after 2 years. Still works fine without updating for the cars I have but wouldn't have newest releases of auto's.
Foxwell charges like $70 for the initial software that never expires. The software is constantly updated. Simple to plug into a laptop (for power) and hit update.
I have the Foxwell and it does come with one free Mfg program so you get the Porsche download included .. The Foxwell works well for all the enthusiast type things you might want to program or diagnose and is pretty decent for what it is.
I have leant it out to friends and all have found it to be an asset , having said this it does like all within it's price point have limitations and it does do more on 997.1 cars when compared to .2 Cars and works just as well on my 955 Cayenne so I would say in general it is geared more for 2008 Porsches and prior more than 2009 and up from my experience with it ...
Has anyone tried to clear an airbag with a Carly? My buddy has my Foxwell currently, and all I have is my Carly. I accidentally set my airbag light off when I was installing my Recaros, and I would love to get that to turn off.
I have Foxwell NT530 and it's quite good. The only problem with that is that it's somewhat cumbersome to use. That small screen is not that user friendly when you need to select for example certain metrics to monitor. I also had some issue with monitoring Tiptronic temperature (for ATF oil change).
On the positive side like @DBJoe996 said it's well maintained it gets frequent updates.
I have one too and generally like it. Plus I have software on it for my wifes Mazda.
I cannot figure out how to read cam deviations, which Foxwell claims it can do. I even got their tech support involved but they eventually gave up.
Have you read cam deviations with it?
Yep, works fine here - I have '99 C4 with DME version 7.2.
I'm guessing your car has DME 5.2 which lacks some parameters and has some issues with reading those in general.
Here are the differences:

Note: Very little coding is available for the 996. If you have a 997, or multiple Porsches, the Professional might be worth it.
I could not get the foxwell to read cam deviation on my 02 either. Also went back and forth with foxwell and they said something to the effect....my car doesn't support it
Well we know that isnt true. I guess I will reach out to Foxwell once I have the engine back together and running. I want to establish a baseline reading to judge chain guide wear.
If you can't do it right away with the Foxwell, find someone with a Durametric Pro to grab camshaft deviations.
Then at least you'll have a baseline while you deal with Foxwell.
I scan other people's 996, 997, 986, 991 all the time for free with my Durametric Pro.
Maybe there is someone in your area that will do the same.
