Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Where can I find which ABS versions were used in the different model years of the 986. Bentley suggest that starting from 2002 ABS 5.7 was used (former 5.3). It does not have wiring diagrams for 2002 and beyond. I have a PDF with diagrams for supposedly all model years and the 2002 diagrams is slighty different than 1998. I didn't check which year the minor change occurs. Number of pins and overall assignment is the same. Starting 2003 it seems to have a plug with more pins. Still similar in the number of connections to the car, but it seems more logical for this to be the ABS 5.7. I am not looking for the info on PSM / traction control etc, just bare ABS. Thanks!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks JFP, Do you happen to know whether that is the same for US models / ROW?

POST 4Original post

Side note... A couple years ago I was helping someone find a specific ABS Module. I was amazed by how many different models there are. Small differences regardless of version number made all the units except for one incompatible with his car.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks so much. So from the listed part numbers it does seem that the low pin count one is the 5.3, while the 5.7 has the higher pin count. So where I am now I have the 987 rear wheel carriers on my 986 to be able to fit the 987 driveshafts (to fit the 987 gearbox). My car is an early 986, so it has ABS 5.3 with the inductive sensors (DF6). The 987 has the hall-effect sensor (DF11), just like the later 986 models with the ABS 5.7. So to retain ABS functionality it seems I have two options; 1. Modify ABS 5.3 to work with the DF11 sensors. Both modules will have an input signal conditioning circuit. I would imagine the 5.7 would have a circuit capable of both sensors, but maybe it is just the hall-effect it supports. Swapping circuitry could be doable. 2. Upgrade my car to ABS5.7. Most signals connecting to the car seem very similar. I would likely loose the VSS signal, but there are ways to recover that. Any options I am not seeing? (apart from motorsport ABS, which is out of budget anyway).

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some update on this topic. The ABS 5.3 seems to have thin film technology electronics, so modifying this to accept the hall sensors is out of the question. It should be quite possible to mimic the inductive sensor with a small circuit, but I do not want to risk anything here in the brake circuit, it is kind of critical. So either I should just accept not having ABS (not mandatory by law to have it operational) or I should upgrade to ABS 5.7 Mechanical / Hydraulic it isn't very difficult. I'll need to swap ABS units with hardlines to MC and to the 'adapter' in the wheel well. From there the front lines will plug right in, but I'll need the additional rear brake line for the separate circuits. That might be a good thing actually as the connection to the brakes hoses is seized and I'd like to put new hoses on. Then on to the electrical side. This is a bit more complicated and I'm not sure whether my wiring diagram is correct (Bently manual doesn't have the ABS 5.7 in, it falsely lists ABS 5.3 to be the only one available). It has a different connector, but 90% of the wires (and colors) are the same. So if length of wire is enough I should be able to crimp new terminals on. All good. The differences I see so far; - The brake light switch should run two wires (NC and NO) instead of single wire. - The e-brake switch is connected on ABS 5.7, but I see no reason to wire it up. - ABS 5.7 normally sends speed info over CAN to the instrument cluster, but it seems like the pulse output is still present. - ABS5.7 has an additional fuse on it's power. - There is no ABS light (instrument cluster) signal present on ABS5.7. Likely this will be send over CAN as well. The PSM5.7 wiring diagram I have does show the signal, just left unconnected. Does anyone know whether the ABS5.7 actually has this signal (ABS-SILA) implemented? So far this seems to be the main challenge. I guess I could always take it from the CAN bus and convert to single IO to drive the cluster. That would require a small microcontroller. Also, any ABS 5.7 wiring diagram out there which is known to be accurate?
