I too thought this was a conservative route - and used these exact bulbs on a previous car.

The ones I used were for off-road (racing) only, and were not UV coated, which was probably a significant portion of the problem.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I am considering installing 100/80 watt H-7 headlight bulbs. I am wondering if the increased amp draw will cause any problems? If anyone has any information on this please advise. Thank you.

POST 2Original post

You'll probably get an over-current error code from the ECU. A better solution is to install an H7 HID lamp (and ballast) of the same wattage as the original halogen H7 bulb since the HID will easily double the light output over a standard halogen system. This will make the ECU sensor system happy and you'll get all the light you need. H7 sounds like a low beam bulb, right?

POST 3Original post

This wattage will melt the plastic headlight lenses over time. Overwattage bulbs were the ticket in the days of glass lenses - but no more.

POST 4Original post

Would you consider the Osram H7 which is a 65w on a 55w base? I have those in my 08 CS and while not HID, of course, are considerably whiter, brighter, farther reaching and broader beamed than stock. I workd with Daniel Stern to get these. I also ordered a set and installed them on my son's 2010 GTI......he really likes the difference.

POST 5Original post

Careful. I too thought this was a conservative route - and used these exact bulbs on a previous car. Over roughly a year the centers of the plastic lenses turned yellow. The ones I used were for off-road (racing) only, and were not UV coated, which was probably a significant portion of the problem. I suspect yours are the same (I can get the P/N if needed). This is how I can confidently say that no higher-wattage bulbs should be used. I think the only safe upgrade on these cars is HID.

POST 6Original post

I would appreciate the PN. I will change them back if they are the same.

Here's an OSRAM PN for a 65W H7: Osram CP64217 H7 12v, 65w Bulb, HYPER, Xenon by Osram. 2100 Lumins 3200 Color Temperature. Susquehanna MotorSports - High Performance Vehicle Lighting and Competition Accessories

POST 8Original post

Looks to probably be the same as the ones I had a bad experience with. My boxes say: 64217 65W . PX26d Made in Germany also: OSRAM halogen 12 volt UV Stop Hyper also: Competition Lamp Off-Road Application Only

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
