Reported fix
Years ago, I replaced my 5/99 cab's radio from a 220 to a modern radio, so since I had one already, I did the swap and added a Bluetooth dongle to the 220's AUX port. Problem solved.

However I really wanted the CarPlay capabilities so I swapped the CDR-210 with a double DIN Pioneer.

I changed the head unit because I upgraded the amp, speakers and wiring and it made sense to upgrade the head.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had a CR-210 before I swapped to a Sony unit; I wired in a bluetooth receiver to the pins from the changer and it worked great.
I have a early build 99' that I'm trying to keep as original as possible. This might be rhetorical, considering my opening sentence, but I want to remove the old aftermarket Kewwood and put back the original Becker stereo. My build sticker is CDR-210 with Hi-Fi option. CD changer in trunk.
It sounds the CDR-220 brings some benefits as better sound quality and an AUX port. But I'm torn as it's not the original one!
I'm sure the Kenwood that's in there now, even if it's from early 2000s, is going to be better sound quality than either the 210 or the 220.
What would you do? Stay true and get the 210, or stay tru-ish and get the 220? I can't afford the PCCM, and don't want a screen.
I'm more of a stock person, but when it comes to radios, no one really cares unless this is a cream puff concours type of car. I'd go with a CDR-220... those radios are nice. Now, if you want modern features, go with the single DIN PCCM from Porsche.
It's not a concours car at all, but it is a piece of history because of the early build designation (at least I like to tell myself it is piece of history), and I'm trying to keep it locked in time as much I can. It's such a trivial thing... It's also a cab, so the radio is going to sound crap regardless....
Part of the crap sound is the speakers. I'd change out the speakers along with the radio. Again, the CDR-220 is a nice radio for that time period. I wouldn't worry over hurting the history of the car. But, if you're that concerned, find you a CDR-210.
Personally, driving a Porsche is music in itself... driving the mountain roads on a warm afternoon is music to my ears.
I have a 10/99 build and I'm trying not to mess with mine too much either. However I really wanted the CarPlay capabilities so I swapped the CDR-210 with a double DIN Pioneer. The original HU is stored away in case anyone wants to re-install it.
For keeping with the spirit of the time, I'd say that the 220 is just fine. I know you said its not a concours car but if you want to be a stickler about what's on it then find out what their rules are. If a judge would knock off points for the 220 then you can make a decision with that in mind.
I recently purchased a 3/98 coupe with the 210. The first thing I wanted to do was to be able to stream music and keep the car as original as possible. Years ago, I replaced my 5/99 cab's radio from a 220 to a modern radio, so since I had one already, I did the swap and added a Bluetooth dongle to the 220's AUX port. Problem solved. Even though it didn't come with my coupe originally, it still fits the style of the car very nicely.
If it's a PCA concours -- at least at the local Northeast events I have participated in -- they are very, very loose on originality in judging. They are entirely fine with something non-original as long as it looks "appropriate" (e.g. not gaudy) for the car. Their focus is on cleanliness, and condition, but not originality. I was pretty shocked/disappointed about the lack of concern for originality. It might be different in different PCA "zones", or at the national level, or for the vintage classes (e.g. 356), but they wouldn't care or even notice the 220 versus 210 in the concours I participated in.
I haven't turned my radio on in 6 months, it still says "code" across the front since the last time the battery went dead....I still haven't punch in the code even though it is right there in the console...lol
That's how much I care about the radio but I hear all the great sounds I can stand.
My 4/98 originally came with a CR-210 and a previous owner swapped it for a CDR-210. Frankly the 210s mesh LESS well with the 996 interior than the 220s, style-wise. I considered a CDR-220 but ultimately opted for a modern but tasteful single DIN for maximum functionality.
I had a CR-210 before I swapped to a Sony unit; I wired in a bluetooth receiver to the pins from the changer and it worked great. Had to leave a cd in the changer to make it work, but otherwise had the stock look with BT streaming.
I changed the head unit because I upgraded the amp, speakers and wiring and it made sense to upgrade the head. May return to a single din unit tho...
I bought something similar to this, here:

You have to take the radio out obviously, but after install it is undetectable. I can still use the CD changer if I want to, I just have to turn off bluetooth on my phone. I don't need a nav screen, and I wanted to keep the stock look too.
220 is ugly IMO the 210 (or 21 for RoW) looks great, and the 23 looks good too. I don't like any aftermarket head units I think they look out of place in a 996.
I ended up buying a 210 (with code) off eBay last night. I like it's more basic look. Hopefully I can get it connected. Wires from the original harness were cut, so will have to splice something back together again.
My dash tweets are somewhere in the dash, and the dash mids are disconnected, so again crossing fingers everything (amp, cd-changer, etc) all just "work"!
