Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have been driving the car through the gears while up on stands, just checking for leaks and bleeding the coolant but I can feel a rubbing through the seat when driving the rear wheels, I have put the car in 3rd gear...

There lies the problem, I need my Reluctor replacing but an Indie won’t do it, they will only replace he drive shaft.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I’m currently trying to source a pair of driveshafts for my Porsche 911 (996 Carrera 2) and seem to be hitting a bit of a wall in terms of availability.
New OEM stock looks pretty scarce (and eye-wateringly expensive where it does exist), and even aftermarket options don’t seem particularly easy to come by at the moment.
Just wondering if anyone here has recently:
Found a reliable supplier (OEM or aftermarket)
Used refurbished/reconditioned shafts and had good results
Had theirs rebuilt (CV joints, boots etc.) and can recommend a company
I’m open to:
Refurbished units on exchange
Having my existing shafts rebuilt if that’s a sensible route
Any known cross-compatible options if they exist
Any recommendations, experiences, or suppliers would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance
depends on what part you are after ?
they exist but as you have said not exactly a common on the shelf part
note
@knw911
when you copy and paste in from an AI chat, always best to remove the extra line spacing
Was that an advisory or a fail?
I guess they look a bit like this?
The wheel speed sensor should line up with the ladder looking ring - the rusty bit next to it is a pressed steel cup type part that can rust badly as seen above.
You could try cleaning the crusty lumpy rust off it it, treat the rust and paint it so it looks tidy and no longer looks like it is "rubbing against wheel speed sensors"
The inner end is easier to rebuild with kits available but the outer end I think only new boots (part 13) are available not the rusty bit shown in the pic above sadly.
Here is what it should look like:
As long as the CV joint isn't knackered it should clean up OK. The reluctor rings are available online and CV boots kits are available from a number of places (D911, Heritage etc) if the joint has play then it's a bit more of a problem. Porsche only sell complete driveshafts circa £1200. D911 do a pattern drive shaft circa £250 but they might have a stock issue. D911 also do the outer CV joint circa £80/90 but these are on back order with a June delivery indicated.
There are a number of Youtube videos showing how to dissassemble drive shafts and CV joints.
If rusty reluctor rings are the only problem I'd source some and get a decent Indy to fit.
In that pic they are not that rusty, they're often a lot worse than that and still work fine!
Fair bit of info in this thread
Thread 'PSM/ABS light on, rubbing noise, potential issue'
19 Apr 2021
Before my engine let go last year I remember having the PSM/ABS light come on and as my car is now complete and is ready to be dropped to the floor for the first time for nearly 9 months I thought it a good idea to try too find out why this was on and I also remember having a feeling through the car while driving, I had put this down to the IMS after that decided to go AWOL.
I have been driving the car through the gears while up on stands, just checking for leaks and bleeding the coolant but I can feel a rubbing through the seat when driving the rear wheels, I have put the car in 3rd gear...

The rear driveshafts for a C4 are eye wateringly expensive and like hens teeth second hand for a decent one.
I may have found a local garage that can do just the Reluctor ring as it’s not difficult.
I've now found out that Shaftec Automotive Components have gone under - who made all the driveshafts. So for the foresable, there is no where to buy them from unless from Porsche. Refurb work looks the way forward.
Strange how it's been damaged. Is the wheel bearing OK? It's not corroded
Might be something flown up from the road and got stuck in there but unlikely.
I just did those on my 2006 E Class, big job but easily doable and good to think I've saved £500 in labour.
Rings were £6 on that car.
