Figured I could spray the MAF with MAF cleaner and check the ICV (can I use throttle body cleaner on the ICV?) pretty quickly.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had my 1999 for about about 1,000 miles. Just crossed over the 100k mark. Had it post-buy inspection done to check for obvious issues (reputable indy). Only issue related to engine was leaky coil tubes (and minor RMS leak which goes away after driving). However, I've noticed while idling at full temp the engine is a little stumbly under 1000 rpm. It's not terrible, just you can feel it bumbling around a bit. I've read a lot of threads, and one starting point is spark plugs/coils. I have no history on the car, so without pulling all the plugs to inspect them, I don't know the last time they were changed. I found this amazing writeup, https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-detailed.html It seems doing coils, plugs, tubes is a "doable" home diy, but also a time investment (and tool investment as new to this). So far I've only done motor mounts, and while I want to get into more DIY I don't want to do something for nothing. Would replacing all three items make sense for the idle issue, or should I start somewhere else? I do have a list of other things that need to be preventively done (water pump, coolant flush, trans fluid, AOS)

POST 2Original post

Stumbley idle could be any number of things including MAF, coils, plugs etc., but its often related to a vacuum leak. There are any number of hoses and joints (rubber elbows and couplings) that could have cracked and/or dry rotted over the years allowing air to enter the system under vacuum.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, replacing some hoses sounds a lot more DIY friendly! Is this what people are testing for when they mention a smoke check? If any leaks?

POST 4Original post

I would start with cleaning/or replacing the MAF sensor. Then clean or replace the throttle body ICV (idle control valve). It gets gummed up really bad and at 100K miles most definitely needs to be looked at. Then a refresh of coils and plugs. Again, at 100K miles they need to be replaced. Check the oil filler pipe for cracks...well known for a vacuum leak.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18666572

Figured I could spray the MAF with MAF cleaner and check the ICV (can I use throttle body cleaner on the ICV?) pretty quickly. But MAF is in place with a security torx, which I don't have. And the T30 I have slightly stripped the ICV bolt. fun times !

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay bought security torx for MAF, and had to resort to impact driver to get ICV bolts off, dang they were on tight. This thing is super black inside. Going to figure out how to activate it with battery and see if jammed with soot. I hooked up positive to center terminal and negative to "top" and it snaps open/closed. But on the "lower" it doesn't do much. Will clean first and try again, though I'm not really sure what it should be doing. Carb cleaner is best choice over Brake or Throttle Body cleaner?

POST 7Original post

I used carb cleaner. That valve inside the ICV should be shiny silver. I cycled the valve with a 9V battery and used Q-tips to clean it.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went through like 30 Q-Tips but I think I got it as clean as I could. Is it okay it's kind of slanted when partially open? (EDIT Found this thread and looks the same. https://www.renntech.org/topic/36592...control-valve/ )
