Someone will be along soon to tell you they're supposed to be like that so Walter Rohrl can modulate his braking, I suppose this is why he fitted 996 turbo 4 pots to his own 997 back in the day (he didn't) and porsche have fitted 4 pots on all turbos since (they haven't).

I currenty run standard disc, upgraded fluid and red stuff pads, but I am after more stopping power and better heat resistance, what upgrades can be recommended for cheap upgrades?

You might want to change the rears to 350mm too to get your bias back.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What would suggest for a brake upgrade on a 996 turbo, I have EBC red stuff pads but want more stopping power, are there bigger disc I can use? I currenty run standard disc, upgraded fluid and red stuff pads, but I am after more stopping power and better heat resistance, what upgrades can be recommended for cheap upgrades? rather than costing a fortune

POST 2Original post

GT3 brake ducts are dirt cheap. Then 350mm disks and 6 piston 996.2 GT3 calipers. If you can cook them you are going some. MC

POST 3Original post

Not a fan of the EBC red stuff pads, reasonable pads but not suitable for the endurance performance of the a Porsche 911 More cooling is very beneficial as suggested There are better options from Pagid, otherwise the main upgrade is to add 6 pot front calipers

POST 5Original post

Dixcel or Endless pads for the win. Pagid is cost no object.

POST 6Original post

The 350mm discs you need for the front are standard 997 turbo. Though nowadays front 996 turbo 350mm are sold as specified. A further upgrade on these would be something like giro discs. You can then either space out the standard front 4 pot caliper with a kit (just a spacer and longer bolts) or fit the brakes the turbo should have had from the start, and fit the 6 pots, because everyone knows the turbo brakes are rubbish and feel like 2 pieces of plywood. (Tells you all you need to know). If you fit GT3 6 pots then you don't need to change the MC as the total size of all the pistons is the same. You might want to change the rears to 350mm too to get your bias back. You just need spacers and discs for that. Giro discs are a significant upgrade if you ask me. I've always used Ferodo DS3000 for the road, just a preference. Race pads take too long to warm up and you get less initial bite, so buy them to suit your driving. Or just get a full set of PCCBs, just depends how bad your suffering with upgradiitus.

POST 7Original post

I have recently upgraded my brakes with: - EBC Red stuff pads - New Brembo discs (standard size) - Goodridge braided hoses - Caliper rebuilds - 997 GT3 master cylinder They are still pretty poor in terms of bite and power so I would be looking at upgrading the disc size if I were you.

POST 8Original post

When you say that there isn't enough power, are you able to trigger the ABS at 70mph? Do you mean that you want more assistance on them? I appreciate that they can lack feel and they need a good shove, but if the brakes are working correctly there should not be an issue with power. MC

POST 9Original post

Echoing what others have already said : 350mm disks & spacers for the original 4 pot calipers GT3 front cooling ducts Decent pads (I use Ferodo ds2500 on my car) That's not crazy money and will certainly help. Next step would be fit 6 pot front calipers and then if you are still not satisfied two piece disks....girodisc, CTE Carbon , Surface Transforms etc etc

POST 10Original post

Braided lines and a brake flush to start with, worked on my C4, my turbo has 6 pot fronts but will be getting braided lines.

Stopping from 150 mph on some quick tracks, the disc just cannot handle it, and rumble like mad after...mine do not feel like wood at all, they are very well used and have plenty of feel and stopping power, but cannot handle hard track days sessions
