I did run into the problem that i got a 99-02 ls1 coolant sensor which is a 2-wire, but my 98' ls1 harness has the pigtail for a 3 wire sensor, so now i have to get a 99+ pigtail.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, i feel i'm far enough into my project to start a build thread. Background on the car so no Porsche purists freak out! lol. This is a 99' 996 with the ever so sought after 3.4l m96
So already a good reason to swap the motor out. Second the reason for all the updated body work was the previous owner/owners (8 i believe!!) side swiped a guard rail and went over curbs with it....so i'm not worried about whipping my sawzall out and cutting up the body....since it wasnt perfect to begin with.
So here we are with the PERFECT candidate for a v8 swap!!
*** So this thread will show my journey into swapping an LSX motor into the P-car ***
I'd like to thank
whit3out
and
1dirtyZ
for the inspiration and also Nick (whit3out) has helped me with my questions tremendously along the way. Great car guy that genuinely likes to help the car community!!
Onto the car:
-99' 996 c2 6speed
-09' GT3rs front clip (genuine bumper,fiberglass fenders,fiberglass hood,genuine head lights)
-996 RSR rear widebody and side skirts (took me awhile to figure out)
-19" HRE 542r's (came with some nasty no name 19's with 6 layers of different color paint on them)
-Bilstein PSS10 (came with custom cut springs!! lol)
-Plastidip Matte white exterior (Great 10 footer!!) At some point i may get all the body work 100% and get a proper paint job on it. Looks great at 10 feet away though!!
-Grey interior with some custom touches.....custom black suede airbag covers!lol, i'm assuming they blew out at some point. Black suede on the inner part of the grey seats.
Onto the pics:
Day i picked her up! If i wasnt soo excited to get into a 911 i would have done a proper inspection and probably wouldnt have gone through with the trade. I uncovered a plethora of hidden damage that was not shared with me. Cut springs, broken and welded subframe, broken under chassis braces, broken and jb welded power steering lines, broken ac lines, etc, etc. Anyway, whats done is done.
Cracked front end and ugly wheels in all their glory!!
Genuine gt3rs front bumper and HRE's added
Plastidip added
Farewell trusty M96
Stiffened up the trans mount while easy to get to
Hello broken subframe! Quality weld repair as well! Old vs. New replacement.
I must be hittin the gym good! One twist with my bare hands!! lol
Hello studly!! (reference to the arp head studs for the non wrench turners)
And wah lah!!
Spec stage......stage good enough for 750ft/tq!!!!
Motor and transaxle mated up via custom plate
BOOM we're in!!
Fabbing up mounts with cardboard
Cardboard into metal
Corvette fuel filter/regulator in stock 996 location
Corvette "batwing" oil pan to look more porschey....its also the shallowest pan with cool road race baffling technology
And thats where i'm at now folks!! Here is a list of things before she cranks up!
-Plug up my gutted Porsche engine harness to run the gauges
-Run power, ground, key on to my GM harness
-fab coolant lines
-install batwing oil pan
-fab temporary exhaust consisting of factory ls6 manifolds, pre cats, and cats.
-fill fluids
-Crank her up!! Fingers crossed since i didnt take this motor out of a running car.
Quite an effort & appreciate you sharing !

LSX motors actually weight a bit less than an M96 surprisingly enough.
Great project! Looks like the car was a bit of turd to start off with, hope you got it for dirt cheap!
I fabbed the motor mounts and had a shop that specializes in kit cars build the adapter plate and flywheel. Came out about $3k cheaper than the renegade kit.
Hopefully soon! I only get 2 days out of the week to work on it, but its very close now!
Yeah, everything i find broken/rigged, i go on ebay and find it on the cheap and replace. That rear subrame was only $50!! I think that is the only thing cheap for a porsche since there's not a large market replacing pieces like that.
It's about 50lbs lighter and will be right at 500hp to the flywheel
Oh yeah, i traded a car i didnt have much into, and was already following the original v8 swap threads.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Just a few more solid days and it will be done, well running.......far from done! lol. It's just waiting on little parts to buy and get shipped to me that holds me up.
It will have the looks and power, just not the sound! lol. But i'll still get some looks with cammed v8 thumping from the back! I looked at gt3rs motors and they were in the $40k range.....way out of my pay grade!!
it was a 93 FD rx7
Not sure, it was already done. Probably that $3kish one on ebay. Fit and finish was great till i threw on the oem bumper, now there is a small gap between the bumper and front of the hood.
will do!
yeah, i feel he got the good end of the deal after finding all the "surprises". I didnt fit good in the fd though @ 6'4, but i made myself fit, it was a cool little car.
More parts showed up! Got my ls6 headers w/ AIR delete plates cleaned up and painted. Coolant sensor, TB elbow, and header install hardware arrived. Headers took all of about 5 mins to install! I did run into the problem that i got a 99-02 ls1 coolant sensor which is a 2-wire, but my 98' ls1 harness has the pigtail for a 3 wire sensor, so now i have to get a 99+ pigtail.
Not too worried about it, this is just a temporary exhaust to get it running. The previous owner of the manifolds left them outside so they had alot of surface rust so i pretty'd them up!
Got some work done! Re-installed the motor/trans, ran a few coolant lines, ran the steam ports. Still need to work on the driver side coolant hose to waterpump, passenger side is done.
I got my new 2 wire coolant sensor pigtail soldered in.
Need to trim a little more off the body/motor mount to fit the heater hoses onto the waterpump.
Ran an oil catch can for the vents in the driver side valve cover.
There is a shot from underneath, shows the ls6 manifolds and it still has the f-bod pan on. I still need to install the batwing pan. I picked up an ls6 mid pipe with pre cats and cats, going to figure some way to fit all that. It still will be crazy loud i'm guessing.....hopefully we'll find out in a couple days!!
Oh yeah thats for sure!! Especially with no funny metal on metal noises! lol. Took a couple trouble shots to get the eletricals right on the harness. At first i was just getting power to one bank of coils/injectors.....but its firing on all 8 now!
Going to fab up an exhaust and finish putting the body work on and i'll have some driving vids.
I cant wait to smoke every M96 powered 996 in every performance metric that can be devised. Not by a little either by a LOT.
Cue the people saying ooohhh I dont care how slow my car is. Its not supposed to be fast. Its a Porsche and I am a cultured Porsche owner (member of the PCA) who is too civilized to care about such crass things. I wear sweaters and when its too warm at the cars and coffee for the sweater I put it around my neck.
My retort youd be cooler if you did.
^^^^ OT alert. I also don’t care how fast
their
car is. I care how fast
my
car is! I’ve found that if I wear my PCA polo shirt I gain 5 BHP (butt horse power), plus I rock that rag. I should probably go to a C&C sometime to see what all the hoopla is about (and write it off while I pass out cards for my coffee cafs). Cue fanfare trumpets!
For the record: If my engine sh*ts the bed, I’m putting in a 2.7T.

Haha^^^^ hysterical
hey Jason I’m stoked for you you have achieved your goal of a fast 911 that won’t break
it’s just not idea of what a Porsche should be
im not picking you out specifically I judge all mismatches with the same disdain
