That’s a drain hole to allow any fuel that overflows when filling up/drips when you remove the filler nozzle to run off and not pool.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi - dropped a screw down the hole circled in the fuel compartment. Any idea what this hole is for / how much of a problem do I have? Thanks

POST 2Original post

That’s a drain hole to allow any fuel that overflows when filling up/drips when you remove the filler nozzle to run off and not pool.

POST 3Original post

.....and also drains water out when it's wet. You might want to get it out incase it blocks the tube. Pour a cup of water down 1st and see what happens.

POST 4Original post

Or, buy a trombone cleaning brush and push it out if you can.... out of interest....how and why did it happen... Purely out of curiosity...?

I was replacing the cap tether...rivet supplied was too big for the hole. Decided to use a bolt and nut, bolt slipped....and somehow found its way into the hole. Enjoy the laugh!

POST 7Original post

My tether has let go recently. The rubber has perished. What did you buy to fix this?

POST 8Original post

Last time I looked the new fuel filler caps were dirt cheap, so I just replace mine when needed. MC

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 2798912

you can get a new cap and tether on ebay for less than a tenner - probably get the tether from the OPC for not a lot of money

POST 10Original post

Am i right in thinking that the early 996's didn't have the tethered fuel cap..?

POST 13Original post

Mine doesn't, but it might be it cleared off years ago.

POST 14Original post

my 2000 does, built in Dec 1999 if that makes any difference
