Can’t you just disconnect the vacuum hoses or something to keep them open all the time?

Bottom line, if you can, I’d highly recommended a 718 Spyder with a JCR - if not, the 981 will do very nicely.

Considering a GT4 as my next purchase (I'm not allocated one will have to consider a flipped one), the one thing that kind of disappoints me is the noise - are there any aftermarket options that bring some noise back so to speak (like the 981 GT4)? Doing away with the GPF etc be an issue?

After GPF is no problem, as per JCR and GAD
If you try to remove GPF you will likely have problem and at least CEL to clear.

GPF is not removed in any of the current available options. In fact it may be illegal to do so and will almost certainly cause CEL without a remap. JCR and GAD engineering options are back box replacement x-pipes.
Sound won’t be back to 981 GT4 levels, but will be louder than 718 stock.
Personally I’d get the car first and run it and then see if you still NEED it. It’s not really a HUGE deal for the closed top GT, sounds ok inside imo and will allow you to run unrestricted on track, especially for the costs… not sure that they even add performance which is primary driver for any mod’s I’d do anyway.

Can you post a link to GAD's new RS GPF Titanium exhaust if there is one.I'm looking at options for mine as a possible more cost effective alternative to JCR's version.

JCR claimed around a 20bhp increase in their post on Rennlist from just the backbox swap...

Yep I’ve seen that, that why I said I’m not sure vs saying they don’t add performance.
Definitely NOT poo-pooing but I’d want to see a dyno, as sound only isn’t worth it for ME for the cost.
Of course the new units are titanium (and this is where the cost comes from) so will save weight… that is a performance gain.
People can buy what they like.

J, I don’t think GAD have a solution for 991.3(GPF) at present. Not evident from the website or instagram.

What I meant is that (I think) there are no sensors after the GPF; just the normal oxygen sensor after the cat. So if the GPF is removed the car may not notice.
Hello Everyone,
first post, I'm from Italy, 718 GT4 owner.
Did you noticed that the exhaust valves closing from 2.000 to around 4.000rpm ? Also if you have the button on.
Someone thought to try to keep it always open? Unplugging the connector as was done on old 997 GT3?
What do you think about?

EU regs. you can buy after market bypass button to choose what the flaps do.

A company called Sportec (near Zurich) has a plug-and-play module where the valves can be overridden so that they are always open. This is done via a remote in the cabin.
A video of this working can be seen here:

Not sure if similar can be achieved by simply removing a fuse though ...
Hi, I have a 718 Spyder with nothing else to do these days I have decided to do the exhaust mod.
I am also going to fit a flap control unit as the flaps close at 2k rpm and don’t open until around 4 even in sport mode.
Does anyone know why Porsche does this? I am guessing either noise or maybe engine/torque control?
I would be interested if anyone knows.
Kind regards
Marc
Are the valves accessible? They used to use turbo blow off valves which could be held open with wire. Maybe that’s still possible without need to fiddle with electronics?

Electronically controlled now - not vacuum.
TDT said:

Sure? I thought they are vacuum - on start up low vacuum means flaps open initially until sufficient vacuum to close them. 992 electronic but 718 still vacuum.

I think in all cases the valves are vacuum actuated but electronics controls the behaviour.
As back pressure alone would mean that once you are up to certain revs/speed the valves stay open.… but we know they open and shut at various points in the rev/speed range.
Also you can open the valves for start up if you turn on ignition, press the button... you hear valves open if you listen out.… then start the car.
In older gen cars defo pre 9x1 (911 & Cayster)… the behaviour was different… open meant open all the time.
No dynamic opening and closing even though the button is pressed.
Been so long since I’ve driven my GT4… I can’t remember if it opens and closes or just stays open.

The 992 exhaust flaps are actuated by stepper motors as are the waste gates. Clearly whether stepper motor or vacuum actuation the instructions come from the ECU.

Do keep us posted on what you go for.
There seems to be quite a few options for the exhaust now.

Ok right… i had read about the 992 valves somewhere but couldn’t remember the exact detail, and also thought it would apply to 718 4.0 as it’s a brand new exhaust system for this application.
I’ve gone with the JCR titanium option on my Spyder. Estimating 6 weeks delivery atm - no problem given I can’t drive the thing! Got 4-5 weeks to go, will update once it’s fitted.

EU noise regs IMHO.
I was told by my OPC that there are more stringent EU noise regs coming which Porsche are apparently already compliant with.
Another 718 GT4 owner here and what dissapoints me most if the complete lack of burbling on the overrun. I'm not after complete artillery fire just some nice burbling with the odd pop and bang. Maybe one for JCR but does replacing the back box system alone introduce more burbles on the overrun or are the OPFs just completely killing the fun?
They're caused by overfuelling via the ECU and emissions regs/GPFs have killed them off. You can't have exhausts chucking out unburnt fuel particles any more.

765LT?... shoots flames and whip crack on the gear change via ignition cut. Porsche could have been more creative to retain some character

Just seen that supersprint do a few exhaust parts now for GT4:

I wonder how they get round the GPF differential pressure sensors and how the rear box fits v the OEM saddle design.
I've heard people with 991.3 GT3s say that if you drive the car quite hard, it doesn't take too long to blow the insides of the GPF out so you get back to a better sounding car quite quickly. JCR or similar a/m exhaust sounds like a good option but will the combination then mean that the car struggles to pass noise restrictions on track, even with the valves closed???
I have been considering the Sportec exhaust option but they did say that it may affect the warranty (and definitely isn't MFK - MoT equivalent here - compliant) so that puts me off a little. I need to speak to Porsche CH to see what they say about that ...
Should have my GT4 fully run-in this weekend (3k kms) so will be interesting to see what she sounds like at 8k revs! Unfortunately, I can no longer just pop over the border and use the derestricted German autobahn so I would only be able to test this in first gear! LOL

Sportec distribute Akrapovic, do they have their own system? Blowing the insides of the GPF sounds a little unlikely.
All that burbling impacts economy too which might have been a driving factor for the 4.0 engine. Clearly economy is not the biggest deal for many of us but I was amazed to see the reduction in economy sport mode has on the 981 GT4. Much more so than any other car I’ve owned.
Correction: i meant exhaust button not sport mode. Thinking of the wrong car!

As I said, just what people with GT3s had said, but I suppose that it may not actually be the GPF that is releasing the extra sound. The Porsche dealer actually said a similar thing to me: "Due to the GPF there is now a smaller muffler set-up in the exhaust itself. You'll notice that the whole system get considerably louder through use as the flow starts to impact the system".
Maybe he was referring to blowing the packing out of the muffler (something I have done previously on the Evo so is eminently doable) but would also then worry about remaining track-friendly.
I guess I'll see over the coming months ...

That is true of the GT3 RS/ Speedster
718 GT4 is totally different system where they have not made the exhaust smaller… in fact it is much larger with the saddle shaped backbox.
So you have 2 muffling effects. From the GPF and then the back box.
Change out the backbox for a open pipe and the GPF is still there.
As mentioned before… over time… years and miles, it may turn out that the GPF material breaks down and let’s through more sound… but then in that case by definition it will be letting more gas particulates through also.
Ice is over for fun new cars , buy a pre PPF car imo and keep it.
New cars will just get dire restrictions and any one messing will get fined and not pass MOT and righty so.

Its a German family owned company who specializes in Motorsport components which should mean top quality..How come i haven't heard of them.?

That thread has gone beyond busy and completely diluted... it's like a full GT4 / Spyder forum wrapped into one thread :-)
This thread is purely referring to exhaust options, and should not be added to that ever increasing holistic topic... lets keep them separate ;-)
JCR have announced their OPF delete pipes today.... these pipes completely replace the over the axle pipes that include the OPF filter, with titanium straight through pipes... currently in test in a number of regions to cover the various configurations of the car as shipped to meet regs, and also apparently without requiring any kind of remap.
Looks like they could be used on their own with the OEM back box, and of course in conjunction with the JCR titanium back box replacement pipes.
I’m gonna go for the IWS system for more reasons than just the £1600 price difference!! Anthony from GAD who are the exclusive sales agents really knows his stuff, recommend dropping him a line, seems very honest and frank which is always handy when pretty much buying blind...

Lol indeed - Bit harsh I always try to be very balanced in my posts
981 Spyder - great car, very happily own one again - only issue I ever had was clutch weight as a daily - fine for a weekend toy. Good value compared to a 718.
781 - chassis and engine - a massive step up from the 981: a proper baby GT now.
OEM noise , a massive step back - however, with a JCR titanium silenced race pipe - this is more than fixed; I actually prefer the sound to the 981 as it’s more “real” - however, this mod pushes the value gap between the cars even further.
Bottom line, if you can, I’d highly recommended a 718 Spyder with a JCR - if not, the 981 will do very nicely.

No regrets - they are all nice
Yep re Leicester .
Think the GT4s sound louder out of the box.
Re valves open, I only get drone when off the gas and slowing down. I have also noticed that the drone has lessened with more miles being put on.
The main advantage of the controller is that you can switch it off when you want quiet
More general noise on cold start is down to injection strategy and the car trying to get various components up to temp as quickly as possible, for occupant comfort and particularly for emission and particulate control.(Cats & GPF)
So car has more revs before dropping down and more injections per stroke during compression during this warmup phase.
These cars will open up on the sound front after a few decent miles.... sound isn’t an issue imo... so it’s not the first thing I’d be rushing to spend would spend any money at all, or bother fiddling with on a 718 4.0.
I tried the mod with the valves by wiring the actuator in the open position as it seemed the simplest way to it try out,I found the sound much improved but there seems to be a slight flutter on the revs at idle and I’m wondering if there is slight movement of the flaps.
Think I’ll do the m6 grub screw mod, does the pipe simply pull off or is there a clip, without removing the wheels or lifting the car it seems a bit difficult to see.

Lockdown boredom and idle hands... very easy to faff with too! (The vacuum lines, that is)

Easier with the wheel off, less risk of skinning your knuckles, ask me how I know
there is a small crimped clip which you can open with a small screwdriver. Pull off pipe screw in grubscrew, push pipe back on, clamp up clip with pliers. Takes about 3 mins per side once the wheel is off.

It'll be interesting to hear how you get on
Having just had my standard exhaust sorted I'm tempted to stick with it as it's great to have no drone again. Combined with the LWFW the car performs superbly and I won't have to worry about noise limits on track days.
I must be getting old
I think it sounds better with a replacement exhaust but drone is an issue and combined with a lower overall tone of exhaust note it's a little tough on the ears/head. I have a theory that the reason the car was delayed so long was to get the exhaust sorted and it might explain why we heard so many different sounding mules.
I'm warming to accepting the car as it is now with the LWFW and just driving the wheels off it

I've put my valves back to stock, don't miss the drone at all. Was a fun little experiment to try out though.

Indeed. I went with the headers first for the performance gain. Think the sound should improve to but not as intrusive as a bacbox or OAPs.

It's with them at the moment awaiting the v2 modifications, there's been a hold up with the inconel piping for the anti-resonance j-pipe sections. Not sure what to do if I decide to stay standard, sell the exhaust once it's updated I guess.
I have been saying this… in reality, the car doesn’t really need exhaust mod for sound.… I’d only ever have considered it as part of a performance package.
As stock sounds well enough for the driver on the inside, especially as you put miles on it, and that’s all that really matters.

Are you getting the sports clutch now to go with the LWFW? - as I see they are now recommending them together... like other people do.
Nope, I'm happy as-is. I'll just replace the clutch when it needs it as there's no point breaking open the car again just for a different clutch.
EDIT: also, I think the clutch is a must-have for the 981 and the LWFW because of the lack of damping somewhere that the 718 has? I can't remember the precise techie details, it was just something Pete at 9m said in passing.

Ok, no problem... guess we'll see how that goes.... anyway, enjoy.
Which PCGB days - have you booked. I'm on Silverstone, Donington and will pick up Outlon Park later in the year - along with a couple Goodwood if i can get on.
I cancelled my Angelsey booking - as I'd want to overnight somewhere - and not sure of all of that will be open etc.

I will indeed.
Are you suspecting there'll be a problem with the standard clutch and the LWFW on my car?
It will be fine for now - and likely be just down to more wear (its a wear item anyway) dependent on your own driving.
But theres are reason why you see these parts changed out together, particularly given their intended use... generally you do LWFW for better response, and you're driving harder.
The engine/FW will be spinning faster to you need to make sure your friction pad can grip it reliably - so uprated plate will offer that.
As you said, if and when - then something to address at that point.
Same as upgrading power without changing clutch plate.
I had just wondered if you had been offered the revision as an early customer.

Cheers T, that's what I suspected. The first LWFW and clutch kit have gone out to a known 718 GT4 owner who has fried their clutch in a very small amount of miles, so that's why I think they've requested an uprated clutch from 9m. That car has been driven hard. Very hard. Thanks for your thoughts and it sounds like my thinking was correct in that there's no point in changing mine until it needs it. I'll decide what to do at that point depending on how quickly the original has worn.
I'll be at Donington and Oulton PCGB days. I was booked onto Snetterton in June but now it's moved to August I can't make it as I was tying June in with a short UK holiday. I'm considering SIlverstone but can't decide whether to bite the bullet and do it or not...

Knowing what you know now Twinfan do you recommend the mod or stick to stock?

I would do the LWFW mod every day of the week and twice on Sundays. The gear change is so slick now it's an absolute joy to do, with minimal rev drops between changes. It's genuinely fabulous
How it is with an uprated clutch I couldn't tell you. Would the pedal be stiffer? Some might like that I guess but as my car is now it's effortless to row through the gears

Your BCF system is an interesting design. It seems to have an always open straight-through section which has narrower pipework and doesn't mix the two banks from each side of the engine. The alternative silenced and valved section mixes the banks and also has larger diameter pipework. Most if not all of the alternative designs have a silenced section that's always open and a valved straight-through section, so the opposite of yours.
Based on that assumption, do you find the valve control isn't as dramatic as the OEM silencer? Or have I misunderstood how the exhaust is configured?
The valve controller open the valves < 4k RPM. With the BCF exhuast, I find drone at ~2k RPM with the valves open. So if I'm in a bullt up area I'd turn off the valve controller. Over 2.5k rpm it sounds fine with the valves open.
Other than that I'm very impressed with the configuration. I believe that the BCF has gone through design iterations. Definetly feel the headers now the BCF has been added. Hope this makes sense?
I have 3 components, Valve Controller, headers and rear box.
I didn't know if you'd tried it with the stock valve control? That would close them around 2k and remove the drone then open them as revs rise. It might save you faffing around with the controller.
I'm just surprised that the silenced route through the pipework is the one that's valved, it doesn't make any sense to me! However, if it works and you're happy with it then all is good
I’m on standard 718GT4 exhaust and happy enough with the sound. What I’m finding frustrating is that when I heel and toe (same with auto-blip to be certain), irrespective of revs, speed etc, sometimes you get the full sport sound but increasingly the blip is silenced. I’ve repeated this many times in search of any cause or trend without success.
I’ve tried to deliberately over-do this with a big boot-full of throttle on down changes and still get silenced mode even though you can see the rev-counter zinging round to around 6000rpm....
Any ideas?
Also, I tried the grub-screw exhaust tweak but for some reason throttle response and/or torque seemed to be reduced. Reverted to standard.
After all the delays and tweaking I now have my 9m exhaust fitted
The 2k-3k range is no longer hard on the ears and head, although there is still a slight touch of boominess in that range under load if the car windows are closed. I think this is why the OEM exhaust is so silenced/restrictive - Porsche really had to quieten the car down to eliminate it. However, it's the slight trade off for a much improved volume level and overall tone, throttle response and power increase. Job done and I'm more than happy with the results. The first thing Mrs Twinfan commented on was the tonal quality of the exhaust note - it really does sound proper good now!
Mine is in inconel with carbon fibre-style tips:

Any pictures of the actual exhaust… or detail of the actual changes made?

Yep, J-pipes were added which you can see plus I don't think my PSE valves were operational when it was first fitted, which they are now:

I definitely fancy the stainless unsilenced one, for around £1500 it would be cheap enough to enjoy and swap out if it was too loud for touring/ or come MOT time if necessary

LOL, no worries, I’ll just drive faster or slower than the drone noise if I’m ever on the motorway, plus I’m fairly mutt n Geoff anyway and have the music blaring if the drive is boring. Like I said at the stainless cost it’s easy to swap out if planning a big Euro hoon.
Bring the noiseeeee

I don’t think any of us would dispute that, but 12-15 grand on an exhaust is either beyond most or a very high percentage of a whole car. I’d definitely get the JCR if I was properly rich though
Enquired about the Akra, but as my GT4 is pre feb 2020 the exhaust is not in stock, only the latter version with alternate fixings, and probably not back in stock till March next year. Deciding whether to wait or look at other options
Saw this video and then bought the Kline inconel OAP and exhaust. Installed myself not too difficult.

I'm considering either the Kline 100 or 200 cells full system for my MY22 GT4 registered in the UK. Following questions:
1) how did you get comfortable w/ not losing the Porsche warranty (I understand the side pipes require a reset of the OPF and that will trigger an ECU error, which can however be erased w/ an OBD..must confess I'm very "green" when it comes to these terms...)?
2) how did you get comfortable w/ passing future MOTs?
Cheers!

I’m thinking of going with the OPF delete / over axle pipes. Does it definitely cause the Check Engine Light and will the ECU need to be reflashed? Warranty isn’t an issue.

I’m pretty sure that deleting the OPF will always trigger the Check Engine Light. You can either reflash the ECU or fit something like this

From what I recall the likes of Mike at Sport and Classic charge about £75 to code out the OPF. However, If you are going to remove the OPF, there are decent power gains to be had from properly remapping the engine.

Thanks for the reply. Remap it is then.
