Probably will have the Numeric Shifter installed before this track season starts.

Suncoast has new 997 shifter for $270, I'm also seeing used examples on eBay for about half that.

Suggestion
There is almost zero reason to change from a stock 996 shifter to a stock 997 shifter unless your 996 shifter is broken and a 997 shifter was just lying around.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

But that said, its still not worth it compared to a short shift kit.
Anyone change their stock 6 speed shifter to a stock 997 shifter? Noticeable difference? I'd like something with a shorter throw, though not necessarily something with drastically increased effort. Suncoast has new 997 shifter for $270, I'm also seeing used examples on eBay for about half that. Install is supposed to be an easy direct swap. Or upgrade to a Porsche short shift?
I highly recommend the 997 shifter. I went from 996 shifter to a short shifter and didn't care for the increased shift effort of the short shifter. For me personally, the short shifter - while offering shorter throws - was a downgrade in shift feel. Many people love them though, so best to try one out in a local car if available before going that route. I switched out the short shifter for a used 997 shifter (rebuilt with the Function First kit just to tighten it up a bit). Very happy with the results - shorter throw than stock 996, with the right shift feel and effort.
I'm going to save you time and money here. There is almost zero reason to change from a stock 996 shifter to a stock 997 shifter unless your 996 shifter is broken and a 997 shifter was just lying around. The 997 stock shifter is not a short throw and if it's a shorter throw than the 996 shifter, it's not worth the time, money, or effort to change it. You are better off upgrading your 996 shifter with a some type of short shift kit or buying a Numeric. I had a short shift kit and I liked it, but I got a Numeric and it was just smoother plus has three different settings. If I were you, I'd do that. Take it from someone who had a 996 shifter with a short shift kit, a stock 997 shifter and a Numeric installed.
I repeat, no matter what is said on this forum do not change out stock 996 for stock 997 and think you are going to get a noticeable difference.
I did this swap and there is a definite and noticeable difference/improvement in the throws length IMO. I would not say that it enhances the precision. I will also say that you will get used to it in about two drives and forget you made the change. I also recently did the Function First upgrade and did not notice any real change. This is probably because there was nothing worn in my shifter that needed the upgrade.
Well, he asked about stock 997 shifter not a GT3. But that said, its still not worth it compared to a short shift kit. If Im not mistaken, the only difference is some metal bearings. Doesnt change the throw significantly.
Just get a Numeric. The cheaper short shift kits are ok too, just not as smooth specifically getting into first gear in the first minute or so of driving. After that theyre ok. But, Numeric is by far the best option.
Barbancourt! Good feedback. Two questions. What are the 3 different settings you mentioned? How is the precision with a 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 3rd shift, on the track, any instances of missing the shift with the Numeric?
Thanks baban the op I think is looking for an upgrade shifter feel and as you said don’t waste your money on a standard 997 but I think the gt3 is an upgrade and much more reasonably priced then the numeric which is 2x the price and labor
I can only say my experience in my car it was a well worth upgrade
There are three holes in the Numeric shift lever that drop the shifter higher or lower in the console. The top setting drops it the lowest and provides the shortest shift, but also the most effort and is somewhat notchy. Its very very rifle bolt action, though. Feels nice but not my favorite for daily driving. I might drive it like that once in awhile for a change up. The lowest setting is very smooth in all gears. Perfectly fine for daily driving, but less aggressive. Still much better than a stock 996 or 997 unit. I like the middle setting, personally. Its precise, but it might take you a few drives to get 100% confident with. Definitely not notchy, but it is nowhere like the soupy feel of a stock unit. Each person is different, though so you may prefer different setting than I do, but there is a good setting for everyone.
Back at 90,000mi I swapped out my original 996 shifter for a new 997 unit. It was definitely better. Still isnt very good.
Ive learned over the years that a better/tighter shifter will also mean more NVH. You have to consider what youre willing to put up with VS what youll gain. Is the car a daily commuter, or a weekend toy? Track tool?
(In defense of the OEM 996 shifter, it was better than my 06 GTO - youd smack your knuckles into the radio when going for 5th)
I didnt experience any noticeable NVH differences on any of the different shifters I tried on my 996. Cables were a different story, but on stock cables there should be no issues other than a notchy feeling on some of the options.
Im a believer in the Numeric. I have a B&M in my 996 and after driving Barbancourts 996, the Numeric is the way unless you compete, the CAE would be a better option.
I should have my Numeric shifter & cables in for this years events. Assuming I get my transmission back in good time, that is. And get all the other misc bits that I need.
I believe Jnelso runs a numeric shifter.
I installed the 997 shifter in my 99 last year.
Didnt really notice the supposed 15% shift throw reduction (and I wasnt looking for a short shifter)
BUT
it did get rid of some of the slack that was noticeable in the 23 year old all plastic original.
So its not a night and day improvement but it is an easy and relatively cheap way to refresh an old worn out part.
Im in the midst of this decision process and your setup is where I was thinking to go. I dont want rifle bolts I just want to take out the slop without adding a bunch of noise or effort. How would you rate your FF + Numeric cables on that scale?
wdb,
Numeric cables were a huge improvement over stock cables, the F1 overhaul kit took out a lot of slop that was in the stock shifter but still not as precise as I would like. That combination was great for the street but I am going with the Numeric shifter for the track.
