I have an oily residue around the left hand (as you look from the rear) intake manifold, you can see the clean mark on the clip where I've wiped it with my finger.
Leading evidence: 'jubilee clip just needs tightening' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'jubilee clip just needs tightening' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean mark' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

During that period I have thought that the AOS could have been on the way too as it was smoking slightly on start up and the car dropped a massive smoke bomb on restarting after running for only 2-3 minutes on a trip to get fuel.

Wipe it clean, tighten the clip properly, and check if the residue stops.

the post didn't add anything new as you'd already suggested tightening the jubilee clip in a previous reply...
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I initially noticed this last year and did both of those things although I guess I should have tightened the jubilee clip up more, it felt tight but I guess it could just have been stiff.

You need to clean it off and see how much you get over a period of time to establish whether it's a problem or not, but yes, the jubilee clip needs tightening once you've done that.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have an oily residue around the left hand (as you look from the rear) intake manifold, you can see the clean mark on the clip where I've wiped it with my finger. The right hand is intake manifold is clean and dry.
Would this indicate a problem or does the jubilee clip needs tightning up?

Thanks Alex,
I initially noticed this last year and did both of those things although I guess I should have tightened the jubilee clip up more, it felt tight but I guess it could just have been stiff.
That would have been around August so 9-ish months and a few thousand miles have passed since then so it's taken a while to become oily again.
During that period I have thought that the AOS could have been on the way too as it was smoking slightly on start up and the car dropped a massive smoke bomb on restarting after running for only 2-3 minutes on a trip to get fuel.
After a week or so the slight smoking on startup went away and it hasn't dropped another smoke bomg since (and hadn't before) so I was left unsure as to the reason.
In that context could these things point to a specific issue?
Hi
I think that type of gunk buildup is reasonably common. Have you removed the oil filler cap with the engine running? If it sucks hard or you cannot even get the cap off then your AOS is suspect.
All the best
Berni
This looks to be normal gunk, although excessive oil build up is likely to be emissions. If oil deposits are forming inside pipework beyond throttle body then early signs of AOL failure.
You would not believe how much grime accumulates on top of the engine hidden from view!
That does look very oily to me, I'd get the throttle body off and get the pipework out of the way and have a good clean up so you can monitor where it might be coming from. Certainly nip the jubilee clips up while you're there.
Worse case scenario point to AOS on the way out, have you noticed odd idling patterns, like fluctuating or high idle? As mentioned above try the oil filler cap test.
