However today, I went to fill up and used a regular nozzle, however after just a few seconds the auto shut off triggered and some of the gas started spewing out of the tank and the overflow by the front passenger wheel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I have been having a problem filling my gas tank for some time but it just got significantly worse. For the last year, sometimes when I fill up my car I end up having to hold the nozzle manually at about half speed, or else the nozzle auto shuts off. This always happened on pumps with the fume shield thing, like in California, but not always on regular, older pumps. However today, I went to fill up and used a regular nozzle, however after just a few seconds the auto shut off triggered and some of the gas started spewing out of the tank and the overflow by the front passenger wheel. This happened 3 times and then I just held the nozzle at half speed until the tank was full. Obviously, something is wrong, and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas what exactly may be wrong. I remember seeing this a while ago, could it be the same thing? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

of course after i posted this i re-read your post and saw the same link in it...just ignore me...my brains already shut down for the weekend maybe this? i got it from here Gas Tank Won't Fill Diagnostic: When you try to fill the gas tank, only about 1/10th of a gallon will go into the tank before the auto-shutoff triggers in the gas pump. Cause: Tubes behind the flapper in the gas tank have slipped. Details: There is a one way flapper type valve at the junction of the filler neck and the tank. This is to allow gas in but not out. There are tubes in the tank behind the valve that can slip down preventing the flapper valve from opening allowing only the filler neck to fill up then slowly seeps by the valve. Take to your dealer with less than 1/2 tank of gas. The fix is to have the dealer secure the tubes up and out of the way of the flapper valve. Time in Shop: Several hours. Repair Instructions: Requires dealer repair. Notes: None.
