Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Strange one, got 63 plate boxster serviced before Christmas checked oil level one bar below max ran fine no issues then in new year warning popped up oil over fill and when level checked oil at max how does that happen? Do I drain some out or is there something else it could be?

POST 2Original post

Initial check with warm oil and subsequent check with hot oil after sustained load? Oil expands slightly (5%) when it gets hot.

POST 3Original post

Yes, get some drained because overfill can cause engine damage as other components can whip oil up into a foam and cause accelerated wear. But as other poster says engine oil expands when hot

POST 4Original post

The oil level sender can give the odd wonky reading. I once had a low oil warning and when I cheked it after restarting the car the level was fine. I would not get too worried by one spurious reading.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorted, drained a small amount out went for run, stoped then restarted leve resle all good back to one bar below max

POST 6Original post

S2red said: Sorted, drained a small amount out went for run, stoped then restarted leve resle all good back to one bar below max Just to check you are taking the oil level reading correctly? Assuming this is a 981 the correct method is: 1. Get engine & oil to operating temperature 2. Turn off engine and wait approx 1 minute 3. Ignition on and check the oil reading Although the car provides an oil reading when the engine is running the correct method (per manual) is above to allow oil to drain back to the pan

POST 7Original post

My dash cam once caught an OPC senior technician demonstrating to an OPC driver how to check the oil on my 981C. Ignition on, pop the boot lid. Why does the boot lid need to be popped before checking the level?
