The heater was on so the fan kicked in, all the gauges functioned properly and the oil check cycled as per normal.

I went to it this morning, put the key in the ignition and turning it to on/check position and everything was fine.

Car felt good today after the winters work changing the suspension with new Bilsteins & lowered H&R springs on a shake down earlier.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I parked the car up yesterday with no indication of any issues, it had been driving absolutely fine.
I went to it this morning, put the key in the ignition and turning it to on/check position and everything was fine.
The heater was on so the fan kicked in, all the gauges functioned properly and the oil check cycled as per normal.
However, when I turned it the last part to start, absolutely nothing - not even a click or chattering of the starter motor and quite clearly enough oomph for to crank?
Any suggestions or good places to start?
Ok. I think I may have found the problem!!
As mentioned above, tried to start the car but no joy.
Then I remembered I had a similar problem years ago with an auto MX5 I had so, I moved the selector from park to neutral and it started first flick of the switch!!
I’m guessing that there’s either a build up of dirt stopping the lever fully sitting in the correct position or, the switch has gone?
Hi there, it's Rog from St Austell.Just seen you earlier post on when your car didn't start. Today i started mine up after the winter months on the lift changing suspension etc. Battery was on a conditioner and started first time. Took her down to my local garage and no problem. Must have started her say 10 times in all during the afternoon. Battery all good. Then went to put her away and on turning the key - no cranking. All lights came on for ignition but not a sound or clicking. Sounds similar to yours in the posts above. Please can you tell me what your problem was and how it got fixed. I'm going to phone RAC home rescue tomorrow but if i can sort it - great. Could it be the immobiliser ? Rog
do the lights on the dash match the position of the gear selector? move the selector though each position and the light should follow it on the dash, if it's not then the multifunctional switch on the side of the gearbox has gone faulty. Try to start the car in neutral and in park. It could also be the starter relay or the inhibitor switch.
Not as yet - now hit the beer !
I'm toying with getting a Card Reader. I'm going to the Car and Restoration show @ the NEC on Sat and getting one.
Car felt good today after the winters work changing the suspension with new Bilsteins & lowered H&R springs on a shake down earlier.
Now she's stuck outside the garage hopefully for one night.
Many thanks for your responses.
Got the RAC out today and did diagnostics. They recon it's the immobiliser. Booked in RAC transporter to local specialist Williams Crawford in Plymouth 13th April. Still time to do jobs and renew brake pads sensors etc. Going to be costly ?
There are a few folk who can diag immobiliser problems - in the 996 it’s a little piece of what looks like glass in your key that is powered up when you put the key in
Hopefully Williams Crawford have the kit to diagnose and fix but I wouldn’t be too sure
Yes he did disconnect the battery. In fairness he spent an hour with his diagnostic computer plus rang up his colleagues for additional advice. So now having to wait until April.
