Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Changed all the coils and plugs, which was surprisingly trouble free!

Suggestion
Try winding it further in so that the end of the bolt protrudes more out the other side, then give it a good dose of WD40 and if you can, try cleaning the end of the thread up a bit.
Leading evidence: 'Replace coils and plugs' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean end of the thread up a bit' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have used different brands of penetrating oil with good success - Plus gas works well.

I used the SuperPaulie mounts for the dashboard, but just hacked up the old speakers to make the rears fit.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Week 2 of working on the 98 996, and it's been a mixed bag.
Good things...
Changed all the coils and plugs, which was surprisingly trouble free! Car feels much smoother and idles better now.
Upgraded all the speakers ... very big difference to the sound. I used the SuperPaulie mounts for the dashboard, but just hacked up the old speakers to make the rears fit.
Changed the discs and pads on the front for new Brembos. The old ones were shocking!
Bad things ...
Went to change the rear discs and pads ....
- firstly, the head sheared off the first caliper bolt, obviously. It was only the actual head, so I could remove the caliper, but now I need to try to remove the rest of it. Tried a stud removal kit from Toolstation, but it was absolute shite. Will try either 2 nuts against each other or some vice-grips tomorrow.
- Got the discs off, put on the first new one and found that they had sent the wrong discs! Too big (991 and 997 it says on the box, even though the supplier said it was for 996 3.4).
- Last person to change the pads didn;t bother putting the shims back, so I'll need to order some more of those too.
I guess it could have been worse
The bolt holes for the calipers are open and the bolts protrude out the back of the hole. They then start getting rusty and manky and make it hard to wind them out. Try winding it further in so that the end of the bolt protrudes more out the other side, then give it a good dose of WD40 and if you can, try cleaning the end of the thread up a bit. Should wind out ok then.
Not the best picture but you can see the bolt holes in casting here and where you can get access to the back:
I was advised the shims weren't necessary but I got new ones anyway, thinking they'd help pull the pads away from disk when not braking. No squeaking/squealing but it was £100 for the shims from OPC.
Just to make me more annoyed, I'm just sending back my 2nd set of Brembo rear discs 'they 100% definitely fit your car' both times! It seems if you put in the spec / reg number for either an ebay shop or Euro Car Parts there is only a 90% chance of it being correct! First set were clearly labelled 'fits 997 / 991', 2nd set were clearly labelled '986 Porsche Boxster'. Third time lucky I hope with ECP, as I cross referenced several sites and got the correct part number.
You could shorten the stud to allow you to thread two nuts on - the double nut technique should help. Also WD40 isn't a great penetrant - you really need something with acetone in, e.g. proper penetrating spray. Good luck
Good advice on the double nut method. Nothing to lose doing it and a good chance of getting it out. With regard to "proper penetrating spray" what product is the best or say in the top five?
I have used different brands of penetrating oil with good success - Plus gas works well. Just pointing out that standard WD40 isn't really a penetrating oil ( or lubricant for that matter), that's why WD40 make a different product that is a penetrant. You can make your own mixing some acetone with a lightweight machine oil.
Plus gas, heat area with a Rothenberger, more plus gas to cool (repeat).
I file down the sides of the bolt to create 2 flats and use an adjustable spanner which often works, you could try that on the area that is damaged. If not try 2 nuts on the remaining thread.
Good luck.
