Now, the V8 noise on the chimaera is just about as good as it gets but I am truly loving the more high pitched noise from the Cayman and would recommend any proper petrolhead to consider it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I recently purchased an 06 Cayman S 3.4 and am loving it. My only criticism is how quiet it is... I am thinking of getting a sports exhaust upgrade. After much research it seems that Gert at Carnewal over in Belgium has a good offering. My only concern is that installing the sports exhaust may effect the re-sale value. Do you think a sports exhaust would put people off or make the car more desirable?

POST 2Original post

if after market less sellable if oem more sellable

POST 3Original post

Not sure of the cost difference but if you can stretch I'd go for the OEM. I have it on a 981 Boxster and it's magic. There are threads on here concerned with the "boominess" (if thats a word) but although it is notably louder and deeper at certain revs I don't have a problem with it on motorways or extended runs. May be different with a Cayman due to the coupe/echo chamber effect??

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any ideas on how much the OEM for a 987 would cost?

POST 5Original post

Not sure, you can get an aftermarket for £15-1800, not sure if thats switchable. OEM starts with a 3 IIRC

POST 6Original post

I have a sports exhaust on the Cayman S Design Edition 1 I purchased recently. As a matter of interest I also have the original to put back on should the next owner decide that he/she doesn't like the sports version. I have no idea what make of exhaust it is but it is certainly 'boomy' in the cab when at low revs (a little intrusively if you really want to know!) but when the engine is properly wound up the boomy noise goes away and the noise is truly sublime! I shall put up with any low level resonance just to hear the noise it makes (and I sold my adored Chimaera with stright through exhausts to buy the Cayman! Now, the V8 noise on the chimaera is just about as good as it gets but I am truly loving the more high pitched noise from the Cayman and would recommend any proper petrolhead to consider it. FWIW, my suggestion would be to keep the original and invest in a new sports exhaust. Go for it fella! If you are in SE london (or are happy to make a trip there) then you are welcome to check my chariot out. JohnnieM

POST 7Original post

FWIW the Carnewal GT is a mod to your existing exhaust (we'll it's a swap). It's is the OEM exhaust essentially, just louder. It doesn't effect emissions in the slightest either. It's 400 Euros, it looks stock and sounds brilliant. Review with really poorly recorded samples: http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/motas/porker10.html Edited by juansolo on Tuesday 11th February 09:41

I've got the factory sports exhaust on my spyder and it's disappointing- the problem is I've been spoilt in the past. If I were you I'd find an aftermarket exhaust you like (listen to other cars or look on youtube) and keep the original for resale.

I've got the PSE on mine (unplugged) and it sounds brilliant.

POST 10Original post

This came up last night on this thread Here's my contribution: I've just today got a 2006 Cayman S with a Milltek system - I haven't had chance to fully exercise it yet but it sounds good so far, more subtle than expected at lower speeds and not crazy at high speed but it's a definite improvement over standard (I have a 996 with PSE and full K&N induction system though so I'm a bit spoilt). I've driven it a bit harder since and I think it works well - nice tailpipes too, thin walled but with Milltek engraved/etched on top of each one.

Zyp said: Sure yours is working properly? I've got the PSE on mine (unplugged) and it sounds brilliant. Yes! I'm used to more cylinders and less silencers... The PSE sounds quite good at high revs but is a victim of catalytic converters and closed loop fuel injection none the less.

KMF said: ZYP Said: I've got the PSE on mine (unplugged) and it sounds brilliant. If you unplug/disconect your PSE does it default to the loud setting? Oh yes - sounds great all the time. Disables the noise cut out at 30 - 40 mph.

Search on YouTube for 'Cayman Capristo', job done!

Martian O said: Search on YouTube for 'Cayman Capristo', job done! I once followed a chap in a Boxster with a Capristo - it was very loud but made a lovely noise.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all of the advice. In conclusion, I think it needs to be done and Carnewal is the way! I will let you know how I get on.

POST 18Original post

ZYP Said: Oh yes - sounds great all the time. Disables the noise cut out at 30 - 40 mph. Were did you disconect your PSE??

POST 19Original post

Engine bay - just unplug the solenoid. I'm on my phone at the moment but when I get home I'll post a picture of it.

POST 22Original post

Thanks for that, so it is just as simple as unplug that conector and your PSE stays on the loud setting

POST 23Original post

As simple as that. 10 minutes max, including getting to the engine and putting everything back together again.

POST 24Original post

Zyp I can hear my exhaust note change at idle when I press the button, so what does disconnecting the solenoid do? I did the same on a previous BMW, but that system was always on and would open a butterfly at 3k rpm.

POST 25Original post

Unplugging the solenoid means your button is redundant (will still light up when pressed), and the exhaust valves are always open. Unplugging also stops the exhaust from muting at 30-40mph (this happens even when the valves are open - a TUV requirement for noise in Grrmany I believe) so you get the lovely noise all the time. Try it - like I said, it's only 10 mins and if you don't like it just plug it back in. DS240 on here has a remote plug in from Carnewal, whereby you connect to the solenoid and control the valves via a remote fob - this also delete the 30-40 muting.

POST 26Original post

It really is a simple job, I totally agree. I was worried about fiddling with things, but simply disconnecting the plug is a very easy solution. It was mentioned that operating the valves occasionally was necessary so I got the remote control from carnewal. Great product. Same benefits as simply unplugging but just means you can still choose whether it is on or off with a button and not require access to the engine bay. All still works, good product. Sports exhaust is also the best option I could have ticked on the spyder. Way too quiet without.

POST 27Original post

I liked the off/on button, but unplugged mine because of the stupid 30-40 valve closes back on you issue. even if you rev the car in sports mode the valve closes back on you, so just best to unplug the bloody thing. just annoying on the motorway if you want to do 200 miles and the exhaust is open all the time. hence the "remote control from carnewal" would be handy for motorway miles.

POST 28Original post

I drove from Notts to Abersoch in North Wales and back, unplugged and roof off all the way. The exhaust noise was no problem whatsoever. (and sounded awesome through the Conway Tunnel!) Possibly with the roof on for that distance it may be an issue.

POST 29Original post

I had the engine hatch off the other day and rerouted one of the vacuum lines to the solenoid. Should have unplugged it then! Will have a play when I tax the car next month. Thanks all.

POST 30Original post

Is the engine cover to get to this inside the car or in the boot. I just not had the car long enuf to play with it yet

POST 31Original post

In the boot behind the seats. I think its easier to get to in the Spyder than a Cayman or normal Boxster.

POST 32Original post

OEM PSE(can keep warranty) or take off non P exhaust and put back original at time of sale.
