Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

911 996 Targa 2002 The rear seats are pooling with water in the seat hollows. I can work out where the water is coming in It is not coming from above, there is no sign of drips or trickles - I think it is getting in somewhere where it then flows under the carpet and plastic panels and then pooling in the hollows. I have taped on the outside of the car at all the seals bt this has no effect. I have removed the padded leather seats so they are not ruined. Any ideas ? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Hello, In my limited capacity as knowing for sure, my guess is going to be your drainage channels are blocked, and when water/rain/liquids drains away from weather or washing, if the channels block that are inside the vehicle, they'll overfill into areas. I'm pretty certain Richard or another will be along with a picture showing you where these are and what to remove to get to them to check. If it's not that, then check all rubber seals etc, if not done so already. I'm sure a quick web search may even give you a diagram of these chanels and where the pipes are inside the car HTH Mark

Hi A few links below may help with your issues, whatever you do make sure you protect the electrical components under the front seats from getting wet as that would be very troublesome & costly. https://www.porscheclubgb../forum/tm.aspx?m=492309 http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=1032352#1032352 https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/632760-targa-water-leak-help-please.html good luck Andy

thanks ill look through those

POST 6Original post

Fellow Targa owner here. As per the links supplied by Andy check the first route is to check the following drainage tubes: 1. Both tubes above the B pillar. Ensure they both have hard plastic inner tubes within them that are located into drainage channels. Also make sure they are big clear. If they’re split then it’s unlikely you can repair them and youre looking at a whole new seal (and roof unit out) to replace... 2. 2x drain tubes each side at bottom of each C pillar. Fiddly to get to and remove. Best by removing rear bulkhead panel (covering rear wiper and locking mechanisms). Again check they are clear, located properly and not split. Bear in mind you may not be able to see any water coming in... its just a gradual drip drip that accumulates and runs down into the buckets beneath the rear seat squabs. The sound proofing is a massive sponge so by the time you see water they are likely To be saturated. As you’ve taped up the roof and water is still coming in I do perhaps think the B and C pillar tubes are unlikely to be the culprit (or main culprit at least). Other sources of leaks I’ve heard of are from the rear side windows and from the wiper unit and locking mechanism. Northway and Precision Porsche are well regarded in the field of diagnosing and repairing leaky Targas. Finally it’s not recommended leaving Targas out in the wet as rain as the silt and leaves etc can contrive to gunge up the mechanism. I’d highly recommend getting a part or full car cover as well.

took it to precision porsche who cleaned the channels and replaced the drain tubes etc. and after the last 2 weeks of torrential rain the rear seats are still dry - reasonable price and they fixed a number of other things as well - highly recommended fun commute back on the steam train on the bluebell railway - check the timetable closely as only a few trains per day but from central london its pretty easy
