I fitted titanium manifold bolts, and new stainless hardware everywhere else. I refurbed everything that was reused including the silencer brackets, heat shields that had their mounts pulled thru, so a cheap washer repair kit from ebay did the trick.

So I snapped my outside bleed nipple on my rear caliper and as the car is in for a service in a couple of weeks I'm going to get all the calipers checked/repaired and all nipples replaced with SS and braided hoses installed at the same time as well as new fluid.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I don't know whether this has been done before, but apart from derailing another topic, or disturbing the appreciation thread from just having some amazing 997 Photos, I thought I would start this one. I know I have lots to rabble on about and ask questions of other people in, exhausts, coilovers, suspension, ICE you name it all on the list. So here we go... just awaiting the new boots to turn up for mine. PS4S all round, that's £2300 I've handed over on Michelin products in the past week and a bit. Excited to get them on though. Anyway, aftermarket exhaust chat anyone? 200 Cel Cats?

Anyway, aftermarket exhaust chat anyone? 200 Cel Cats? Which model? Carrera, S, turbo, GT? Mines a tip 997 turbo. Merc paddles make the gearbox more bearable. The power delivery of the turbo helps disguise the flaws in quite an aged (but really strong) gearbox. If you have PASM, I recommend a DSC module - this, together with a suspension refresh, top mounts, coffin arms etc and fresh PS4S transforms the handling. You’ll need the gyro module if you have a non-turbo .1 ICE - PCM with Bose and subs is, at best, crap. Loads you can do to improve it, budget dependent. I think Porsche have released their own 997 fitment PCCM+ but far better can be achieved elsewhere with a HU swap, decent mid drivers in the doors etc.

977.1 C2S for me. I think I have come to the conclusion I'd like the Topgear switchable mufflers, I have spent too many days reading about it, I posted on the 997 Carrera Owners UK group too and some people posted some vids. I'll say Headers, 200 Cel Cats and the X-Pipe sounded way too lairy for me, even if you can shut the valves. So mufflers decided upon, its really whether I add the 200 Cel Cats with the cross over pipes too, which I assume takes out the centre muffler?

I’d have done it myself but the cat bolts look too far gone for me to get out while lay on the garage floor.

looking for some advice on my battery, which is an 18 month old Bosch S5, on my 997.1. I've recently got my car back from a 2 month long repair for a faulty gearbox. Whilst the g/box was being repaired the car sat outside the garage and didn't move for circa 6-8 weeks. Since having the car back I've been alerted, by my Bluetooth battery monitor, that the battery is now loosing it's charge over a couple of days. Before the repair I never noticed it loosing charge and I suspect it was taking weeks to discharge. Could a 2 month period of neglect cause this? Thanks

Batteries can be fickle things at times, I had to do the same on my Mini, battery wasn't even that old it just didn't go anywhere for a while and it was done. I thinkI have come to the conclusion that I am going to go for the TopGear valved mufflers and 200 Cel Cats with the cross over pipe, I think it should be on the right side of the lairy scale, we'll find out I guess.

POST 10Original post

FriedMarsBar said: Could a 2 month period of neglect cause this? Thanks Yes. I accidentally forgot to turn on my maintenance charger when parking up two years ago, and the battery went flat inside two weeks. Remember that in addition to the alarm, most 997s have trackers too which are on all the time regardless, not to mention the heavy load the battery has to deal with powering all the additional control modules a 997 has over the 996 when it's running, so if used for a short journey there's no way you'll make up the voltage used to start and run the car for the period. After it went flat, my battery - Same Bosch as yours - never cranked the same and gave up the Ghost altogether a couple of months ago. Right after we moved house, which was nice.

Unless the plumbing changes drastically with this setup, you won't need a crossover pipe as the 997.1 doesn't have one because the cats are in the middle of the pipework behind the bumper. 997.2s can manage a crossover pipe mod as their cats are built into the manifolds. (Sorry if you've though of / realised that)

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahhhh I had not realised that, I thought there was a 3rd muffler that the crossover pipe removes also?

POST 13Original post

Da Original Whyayedee said: Ahhhh I had not realised that, I thought there was a 3rd muffler that the crossover pipe removes also? I did wonder. No, there's not. With the 997.1 gas routing goes: Into the manifolds, round to the back of the car where the cats are - crossing over at the same time - then into the silencers. So basically, there's one cat and one silencer per bank.

(Sorry if you've though of / realised that) TopGear do two types of 200 cells cats: crossover and X-pipe. It is the crossover most people go for - they do sound different and you lose some low end torque with the X-pipe. Make sure you get the one that fits your needs.

Has anyone used Spyder Performance or some of their parts? A set of Polybushed lower control arms for £360 seems incredible value..... is there a catch?

Excellent thread What's the cheapest way to replace the TPM? I've been quoted a fairly ridiculous amount by a Porsche dealer, short of waiting until fronts or rears need replacing is there any magic to it?

POST 22Original post

Do all 997’s have a TPM? I guess back then it was probably most definitely an option. Only aslong as I don’t know whether mine does or not.

POST 23Original post

No TPM was an option on most models as far a I know. My GTS doesn’t have it which is good news in my book as the system seems troublesome/expensive on most cars as they age!

I'm off over Christmas so can keep an eye on it. I've been using a little LiPo battery on my cars. I swap and change the car depending on which one I am using more regularly. I am starting to think these make more sense for an occasional use car which is not sat plugged in to a maintainer constantly. LiPo batteries generally come with some in built protection which stops them getting fully drained because this can scrap a LiPo battery. These batteries give full power whatever their charge level. So if it has charge you will never experience a lazy starter. The best bit is they charge very quickly. So little journeys will give it a good charge. You can even get the more expensive ones with in built low energy Bluetooth so they can tell your phone their charge state. Oh and they are about 25% of the weight too.

You make your choice. My first purchase has no Bluetooth and it does not even mount like a traditional battery. It will go flat if left in a car which is not used for about 4 or 5 weeks. If you want one which will last longer you need to buy a bigger one. I also remove the battery tray when I'm using mine as you can see. I have another in my camper which I might use in the car instead.

Fortunately I did, and although £300+vat lighter, I'm not £15k lighter for a rebuild this morning. Came back Cyl 6, scored 'not excessively, but not going to get any better' and Cyl 5, 'early signs are there'. Full service history, no signs of ticking engine, no signs of soot on one set of exhausts. Low-ish mileage (< 70k), few other issues as well, but those could have been dealt with / negotiated into the deal. To all the wise sages on here who say get it inspected - thank you. To potential buyers, be careful.... To my very patient wife - sorry darling, but my hunt goes on.... Edited by dgswk on Tuesday 17th January 10:47

No worries Cylinder 1, normal for age / mileage (2 and 3 look the same) Cylinder 4, normal-ish but apparently some early signs (looks the same as 1-3 to me) Cylinder 5, early signs (again, hard to tell for me, but there are some wider marks) Cylinder 6, yeah, OK, that's not right, even I can see that Obviously, the people doing the check can have a really good nose around so the pictures are just a snapshot of the evidence for me. I don't want this thread to turn into another Borescore thread, and I'm not naming / shaming the dealer as my gut is that they didn't know and they've probably got a car worth £5-10k less than they paid for it.\ If you are buying one - and I still thoroughly intend to - get it checked out, Borescore is not an internet myth, it exists in the wild!

Thanks that does sound like an interesting option, I'll research them. I'm about to fit a small solar panel to the roof of my garage with a built in maintaner.

Is this all just to charge your car battery? This is the sort of thing you can get for camper vans. Should easily be able to start your car and should fit in the battery tray like a conventional lead acid battery. Not sure how long it will last but says equivalent to a 120ah. That's a very big lead acid battery equivalent. Then when you drive the car it should take a full charge in much quicker time than a lead acid. So ideally you would charge it fully from just driving occasionally and then forget about it. The other option of course is taking it into the house overnight for a charge. You can easily carry it with one hand. My little 20ah LiPo last for 5 or 6 werke I'd guess if the car isn't used. I'd extrapolate that to 15 weeks for this bigger one if it is 3 times the size. Obviously with the Bluetooth app you can query the battery and see how much juice it has left when discharging but also while driving and charging. These LiPo batteries will give full power for starting even when only 5% charged. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113759969195

So I snapped my outside bleed nipple on my rear caliper and as the car is in for a service in a couple of weeks I'm going to get all the calipers checked/repaired and all nipples replaced with SS and braided hoses installed at the same time as well as new fluid. Discs and pads are fairly new at 2 years old but they will checked at the same time. Is there anything brake related I need to consider?

If keeping your calipers on the car then No not much other than the main rigid brake pipes that run the length of the car. I had these done on my 996 5 years ago so these can be past their best if your car is over 15 years old. Some people use standard copper pipe bent to shape and some use genuine Porsche parts. If removing your calipers then you can start thinking about caliper bolts, the handbrake parts hidden behind the rear discs, the discs and pads you mentioned, the pads have some anti squeal shims, there is a pin which holds the pads in and some R clips to hold these in also. Basically all parts other than the calipers, discs and pads themselves. Some people go for caliper refurbishment which means stripping them down and replacing seals and pistons. You can also get the main caliper bodies powder coated whilst at it.

POST 39Original post

Thanks ATM, that's a comprehensive list. I've had the handbrake bits replaced recently and my mechanic says that the long brake pipes are all fine, well at least he did about 6 months ago! I think I'll have a go at refurbing the brakes over winter, new seals and pistons if required and I'll paint them myself too. Thanks

POST 42Original post

So my 997.1 Carrera S has just come back from a major service at an indy with a report of split silencers and corroded mounts. I've been quoted around £2-3k for Dansk replacements or £5k for OEM. I was told that OEM are the best quality, they've lasted 118k miles after all, Dansk apparently could do 60k but others might not last more than a year or two. Can I ask what are people's thoughts on the different exhausts available, in terms of quality in particular. I'm not bothered about making the car noisier than it already is, but quality/longevity of the part and cost is my concern. Incidentally, the car's a keeper. I've had her 7 years and she's not going anywhere!

POST 43Original post

I would avoid Dansk. Look nice but... I would go Topgear switchable. Or OEM. I have OEM sports exhaust on my 4.1, but Topgear manifolds and 200 cell cats. Good quality and fit and very reasonable.

POST 44Original post

I'd go OEM as your indy correct aftermarket use lower grade steel. Ask for a PSE version if it was an option on the 997.1 C2S. If you contact Porsche via email they should hopefully look after you try [email removed]. Should not cost anything like 5k GBP unless you need the whole system inc manifolds but even then Porsche can give you anything up to 25% discount on parts if you ask very nicely.

POST 46Original post

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll speak to a few people and get some prices and then take it a local garage who I’ve used before and are reliable and get their opinion. I’ve got a fair old list of things that need sorting out, the garage who did the service helpfully put everything in order of priority, so I can work through the list and get it sorted. Repairing the original is something I hadn’t thought of, but I suppose once the joints start wearing out, they’ll deteriorate all over? Not something I have the faintest clue about tbh, so, again, I’ll get another opinion.

POST 47Original post

Couldn't you get a full Inconel system for [total guess] 8k which is half the weight of steel and is surely the absolute pinnacle in terms of exhaust fetishism. https://www.kline-innovation.com/exhaust-collectio...

POST 48Original post

Exhaust fetishism is a new concept to me - I'm sure they're gorgeous, but if I ever get to the point of looking for a pinnacle to reach, I'll start with a bare metal respray, new roof, refurbished leather and get something invincible sprayed over the undercarriage. I don't realistically think that'll ever happen though - I'll just keep driving about with a grin on my face and pretending to be a boy racer at every set of lights in the South-East and beyond! Thanks for the suggestion tho'.

POST 49Original post

The original exhausts can be patched up, I've sorted the seams on the underside of both my silencers (with mild steel by mistake) and a couple of years later they're still OK. If I had patched them up with stainless I'm sure they'd last another 20 years. If it's more complicated than just seams it may not be economical depending on labour rates etc. Not sure where you are based but https://www.exhaustmods.co.uk in Hertfordshire can repair most issues, brackets, seams etc and replace all the fixings with SS at the same time.

POST 50Original post

How big a job is it to replace the mounts - presumably that are going to corrode away eventually?

Thank you. Yes, I'm aware that there are all sorts of after-market silencers available, I was just questioning their quality etc. in light of the indy telling me that cheaper options wouldn't last long. I wouldn't know one grade of steel from another, so I need to speak to someone who knows what's what. The repair suggestion is interesting - I'll give the PCW place a call and see if they can have a look at it - many thanks FMB.

In my case the metal the mount attached to (the outer shell of the silencer) had thined out and simply cracked. I think I cleaned it, welded it up and then ground it back but in retrospect some thin plate, covering the crack, welded to the bracket and the shell would have been better. I have the Top Gear Switchable Mufflers and their 200 Cel Cats. The good bit is the difference between the valves open and closed is massive, the quality of it all is good too and all in before fitting I think I paid £1800 with their tips too, so cheaper if you want to keep them OEM. If you're on the 911uk forum you can get 10% off. When its all open, I am still 50/50 about the noise, its pretty loud.

POST 62Original post

New Designtek complete exhaust system all fitted and finished now. It was a bit of a mission, everything was rusted solid as expected, particularly the silencer to bracket interface! Out of the 12 manifold bolts, 6 sheared off as i tried to remove them, then another 1 of the 4 silencer bracket to head bolts also snapped off. I extracted all of them out succesfully without a jig. I fitted titanium manifold bolts, and new stainless hardware everywhere else. I refurbed everything that was reused including the silencer brackets, heat shields that had their mounts pulled thru, so a cheap washer repair kit from ebay did the trick. I bought new brackets that hold the crossover pipes, and rear bumper crash bar brackets. Due to access while the old exhaust was off, I thought I would fit new spark plugs and coil packs, I found it made life easier to do these with the engine dropped from its mounts a little bit. While in that area, I treated the area to a cleanup, paint where req, and protected with wax. I managed to get hold of new olives for the exhaust tips, not sure if these were slightly bigger than the originals, but i had to open up the tips with a cheap exhaust pipe expander from good old ebay again. On first startup I had a check engine light. I had refitted the old 02 sensors, so Tony at Porschtek near me suggested new sensors might fix this, sure enough when I fitted new ones and took it for a blat to The Motorist on NYD, the CEL disappeared. The noise is slightly louder on acceleration, mine doesnt have the valves. But really happy so far. The quality of the fit and finish of the Designtek s/s system is perfect, it took a while to get it delivered due to the silencers being on back order, but I was not too bothered. Here are a few pics. [

Well mine is now in the workshop: Few changes to the Exhaust, didn't add the Top Gear headers last time so they're now going on. The Cross Pipe 200 Cel Cats are coming out and being replaced by the Top Gear 200 Cel Cats X-Pipe, the tone of previous just wasn't right, too barky and raspy, this should hopefully sort that. o IPD Plenum and GT3 Throttle Body going on. o OEM exhaust panel is being put in and connected up to the Top Gear Valved mufflers to get rid of the keyfob which I hate. o Lightweight Flywheel going on. Then all off to Avon tuning for a day of fettling and mapping. I ordered a new Ash gear knob too from Built by Basel satin with Martini strips, which I was made aware of today, look lovely ordered straight away. I know I said on the Appreciation thread it was Ducktails and Aerokit time, alas, run out of funds on this occasion and I think its a 2027 job, which is likely to be a full colour change, its keeper now, I am in too deep! I'll update with pics as it happens.

Terry Winks said: I can't remember whether this was asked before, but my search attempts are failing me. The CSR cars from RPMTechnik, did someone say the exhausts they put on those cars were made by someone in Bicester? Sorry - late to this party Terry. They are, made by REEF (Ryan Edwards) I've got a set of his CSR manifolds on my car. Top quality work, oval-section, equal length primaries and all back-purged. https://www.reefexhausts.co.uk/
