Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes I searched. And the factory parts manual diagram sucks as one cannot relate it to location in the car in many cases other than front/rear. I see a few pictures in the Pelican tech article but it's not complete.
Has anyone put together a definitive list of all the cooling system hoses and clamps on the 996? With part numbers and location? Would be even better with pictures!
Thanks in advance.
This recently happened to me and Asahi was able to point me in the right direction.
Subscribing also because you're right the factory diagrams aren't easy to follow...
I want to drain and flush my entire system. I would like to see where each hose sits relative to the heat soak it gets then decide which ones to replace. I plan to do the water pump and thermostat at the same time.
I have had all the covers off my 21K original mile 996 and most of the hoses look just fine, but some have a softer feel or borderline bulging. So it seems unnecessary to replace them all, but there are so many hoses it would be good to see how many there actually are and where they are all located.
Point is I don't want to do this again for awhile so I'd like to be able to plan it well, and there doesn't seem to be a good resource reference that I have found yet. Hopefully someone has one.

Really? Would you like someone to hold your hand as well?

Try design911.com, on their main page of full website on left is parts diagrams tab, navigate through then you should get a diagram with all parts listed underneath ok
Exactly. Since I have a lift in my garage when I get to doing this project this winter I can take tons of photos and try to make some good diagrams that shows the location and accessibility of each hose, then cross reference them to the part numbers. The problem with the factory diagrams is they don't relate the locations of any of the hoses to other components. The clamps and any hose guides/straps/clips (if broken as they often are) are difficult to figure out from the factory diagrams.
No worries, I'd like to get the original of that image before someone modified it for the LS swap. Couldn't find it in the factory manual, have to keep looking as those diagrams are very useful.
The factory parts diagrams are very helpful but can be a handful to decipher for a first timer!
I still don't quite understand the coolant hose diagrams yet either.
There are only two really large hoses, one connected to the engine via the oil pump console on the passenger side. The other one connects to the thermostat on the left. You can see the diagram in my previous post #23 and 24.
Thanks, if only it had the part numbers it would be the perfect diagram!! The number actually represents where the clamps are
Hopefully someone finds it useful.
Reviving this thread. I'm in the same boat. I've printed off the diagrams from AutoAtlanta and have stood by the car looking for the hoses. There are a couple of key parts that I can see, but not on the parts diagram. I'd like to replace all the hoses at the rear of the car along with the water pump. I'll tackle the front end at another time.
Thanks to FCP for the pic. I reached out to them, but they were not able to give a complete or reliable quote for all the hoses. They are working off the same diagram.
I have trouble orienting the car to the diagrams. Where is the front?
For instance, where on the three diagrams is this part?
The front is on the left. Whoever created these exploded diagrams moved the items too much and what you see in the diagram doesn't really match where they are. After you've replaced all the hoses (I did in the engine area) you can make the hoses out.
I would think the front was on the left. Agreed on that point.
Where did you get your hoses? Did you take them all off and then start sorting?
I'm sure that this topic has been exhausted, but in all the forums I haven't found a definitive listing or way to figure it out. Reached out to Pelican as well, but haven't heard back.
Another example. I can find this on the car, but not the diagrams.
Thx to FCP for the pic.
Here are the hoses I replaced on my 2003 4S, 6-Speed Coupe. Being Porsche I'm sure some cars of the same year and model and definitely cars for other years and different models require different hoses here or there. Item #23 is a 997 spring hose that requires a new fitting on the engine (spring clip; older style was tension clip) but the hose fits better than the older hose style and doesn't rub against the car body. Pelican advertises this hose and connector for my 4S.
This is #23 in my diagram above. This is the major hose on the passenger side rear. The hose going forward to the major tube has the spring clip end and is unchanged from the 996 hose. At the engine connection they went with the spring clip style for the 997 which is why you need that aluminum clip style fitting shown in the pic.
That piece is Item #18 in my diagram above (AOS hose routing diagram). I replaced mine with an
aftermarket stainless steel connector piece
which you can find many places. I wouldn't replace that with another plastic piece.
Wow! Thank you
James_03C4S
This is the best explanation of the topic I've been able find! Excellent pix. I'm sure this will help get me there.
Thanks again!
Right, #18 is over on the AOS diagram. Wasn't looking there. Many many thanks for this clarification.
So grateful I found someone friendly and didn't get flamed!
Here r the hoses for a 2000 c2. I used the autoatlanta drawings and got all the hoses and clamps without too much issue. I bought most from autoatlanta and the rest from my local dealer, delaware porsche. I did not use that newer style lower hose as original style was availabe, most parts i got were uro hoses. Sorry i didnt keep all the patt numbers.
I think its worth bringing these topics up as part numbers change and so does the fitment with those changes. Hoping to start working on the water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, and engine mounts this weekend. Went with Porsche parts with the exception of the motor mounts (Rein) and the thermostat (LN). Those diagrams people made, sourced, etc are a big help. Ill be looking at hoses for leakage and condition as I go, and may postpone the refill to get additional parts.
As another data point for those who dont know my car it has over 200k miles on it. While doing a hpde day i had a hose clamp fail, luckily in the pits. Most if my hoses in the engine bay felt bad, so just like all the rubber parts on the suspension, it seams like all my rubber hoses were aging out. I also did the vac lines and oil heat exchanger. Im pretty sure i was under $1k in parts.
Up on the lift and with the intakes and front bumper off u can get to all the hose fairly easy.
My first Mercedes Benz was a diesel and it died from a broken water hose. That was 30 years ago. I'm phobic about them and diligent to seek out and change every last one on every car I've ever owned. I absolutely love the pic you shared. I'm doing the back hoses over winter and will do the front hoses next year. I had the front bumper off this past summer and got it painted. While I was there I cleaned the radiators and checked everything. It all looks ok, but . . .
Did all the engine bay hoses this year and got pretty much all PN for thoses parts in this thread:

This thread or at least a few of the posts ( DeJeeper, Hugo...) should be a sticky, along with Asai's coolant drainage thread... just sayin'...
very helpful...
Recently replaced radiators and decided to also replace all the hoses I could get to (there's a couple at the front of the engine I didn't think i could replace with the engine in).
Made a spreadsheet using the PET from
@AutoAtlanta
. 1999 996 C2.
Ordered from
@FCP Euro
,
@PelicanParts.com
and my local dealer (Porsche Livermore).
Hope this helps
Lol this thread has turned into 4 pages of great information when the initial responses were "can't you read the damn parts manual you dumbass"? Good work guys. I don't have my 996 GT3 anymore but glad this thread I started has helped many people.
