greetings
I want to let boxster owners know it can be done by the right people cheaply and reliably.
my 99 boxster, which i bought in 2003, died of a faulty ims bearing after 129k miles. I posted requests for how to install a 2002s engine into the 99 chassis and Kevlar (lee) on this site came through after tom florio at advanced automotive in new Windsor agreed he didn't want the job as he mostly rebuilds 911 engines.
lee and his father marcello own hybrid motors in Fairview nj and they readily agreed to the job. they make a great team. Marcello, lee's father, was a mechanic at the first Porsche dealer in new England and started this shop over 20 years ago.
Here are the modifications but get further info from lee as im not a mechanic.
Ecu 996. 3.4 mechanical throttle
Drilled and tapped the cylinder heads for a 3.4 manifold.
2.5 wire harness modified for the longer intake manifold
Added white wire to ECU connector to activate manifold switch over valve
Used early 996 throttle and crossover pipe to 3.5 inches, 90° silicone elbow to 3.5 mass airflow housing. Insert 996 Mass air flow sensor into the housing
Used Cayman S airbox
Slightly trim engine bay one quarter inch by cylinders 123
Use 2.5 L fuel rail, Slightly modified.
Cayman S engine cover
Fuel trims are perfect
Tom Florio at advanced automotive in new Windsor new York did the inspection afterward with no issues.
Engine was not lowered, a great plus.
I don't know how much power I have I have not yet had it Dino tested. My guess is somewhere between 270 and 290 hp
The car easily goes up a hill in 4th that I did before in 3rd. the 5 speed is quicker off the line than the 6. I get 80 out of 2nd in a hurry.
Gasoline mileage is still between 24 and 26 miles per gallon mixed driving, same as 2.5 motor over 2000 miles and 3 months driving
Total expenses were $4000 for a used 3.2 engine with 53k miles and lifetime ims bearing from genuine Porsche parts in new mexico, $600 for the parts listed, and $3500 for labor. When one of the fuel injectors went lee replaced it free of charge. He and his son stand behind their work.
Lee did the majority of the work and also races a Boxster at various tracks in New England, where he has placed 2nd in racing against far more substantial competitors.
Nice.. Good job
