I,ve read that air bleeding can be a problem and the easiest way around this is to use a vacuum pump.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My plan is to pressure check, drain and flush the radiator system on our 2000 996 Cab. I,ve read that air bleeding can be a problem and the easiest way around this is to use a vacuum pump. Now this has probably been tried before, but could a shop vac be used as a vacuum source and if so, the question is where do I hook the vacuum to pull the coolant through the system?

POST 2Original post

"Factory" way is to pull a vacuum on the system, close the vacuum side of a "T" open the other side to pull coolant into the system. Do a search on Renntech.org or Rennlist.com.

POST 3Original post

It is not like a 535, and especially not like a Z28 (a sample couple of watercooled cars I had experience with prior to my first watercooled Porsche-and first Porsche coolant flush). I had concerns too, and figured how to do it easy and without problem. It is not hard at all, there is a little handle on top of the filler cap. The air goes to the reservoir, then you add more 50% coolant/ 50% water as needed. May have to run it, shut if off, add a little more. There is a drain under neath near the rear (this is the most important part) and once you know where the drain is it is it is easy. I have learned to do it like this , and to change out a gallon or two every oil change. That is what I do. If keep the car level, less comes out. So if it will make you feel better raise the front a few inches more than the back and a lot more will come out, then later times, you will probably see all is well and not want to empty it as much any more (as that is when it takes a couple of tries to top it off. Remember it is not like a Beemer where you have to purge it. Just trying to keep it simple for you. I am sure there is a need for a more complex method when it is empty, as there are scores of feet of coolant lines on your car. Regards,

POST 4Original post

FYI the coolant filled by the factory is supposed to be for the life of the car. That is, until your water pump needs replacement....
