If Hartech are doing the work, there's an extremely good chance they will supply a tested used head.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not a sight any of us want to see… here is my 996 enroute to Hartech to fix my oil & coolant intermix once and for all.
She’s been parked up since December so I dearly hope to have her back for Spring.
Everyone still suspects the issue is a cracked cylinder head which I will know for sure very soon.
But what do you do if you need a head replacement? Not sure which bank yet…Am assuming 4-6 as the exhaust was smoking on the near side. I have started to look around for secondhand heads but there isn’t much happening. (Why are the turbos cheaper??)
A new one is apparently £3k plus VAT
A secondhand one under £1k doesn’t seem to be an easy find.
I’m thinking a second hand one has every chance of following the same fate as mine. But then isn’t a new one still based on the original moulding & design (albeit 100k miles less) and could also fail at some point?
Any advice appreciated. I really need to reign in some of the costs and I’m telling myself that if a second hand one has lasted this long, and it’s in good condition, it might be a keeper. But the closer it gets to £2k I start to wonder. Not that I can find one!
I just know I’m going to get a call confirming cracked cylinder head and all work will stop whilst I’m held hostage to current prices trying to source a replacement!!
If Hartech are doing the work, there's an extremely good chance they will supply a tested used head. I wouldn't even bother worrying or looking until they get back to you?
I would've thought that's why you're sending it to them in the first place.
Edit: There's no better sight seeing your pride and joy off to Hartech.
Thanks Alex. Very true. I spoke to Grant at Hartech last week and he can source a new one but doesn’t have any second hand ones right now. He mentioned I might need to start looking - if it turns out to be that of course.
Did you ask Grant about using a 3.2 986 Boxster head? They're the same other than something Hooner pointed out, you need to drill and tap the little turrets for the exhaust hangers underneath near the headers.
There's way more of those
There's one on eBay from Latvia but you're in to a couple of grand:
Porsche 996 911 3.4 M96.01 Cylinder Head Right 4-6 9961041391R | eBay UK
PORSCHE [phone removed]-2005. Ready to install.

Also 9-apart up near Hartech have this listed on eBay for £800. Say's it's for a 3.4 but dury's out as in the details says for 997 3.8. I'd deffo give 9-apart a call and ask them what they have. They'll likely do a cheaper price over the phone too than on eBay:
