I've been looking for an 07/08
Boxster base
manual but have had no luck. The other day I came across an early 06
Boxster base
with 81K, full service history and otherwise great condition. It has a new (used) engine installed at 77k miles. The new engine had 27k on it and had the
LN Engineering
/
FCP Euro
IMS bearing
, so it should be safe from here on out. The other advantage is that it had a bunch of ancillary work done with the swap, like clutch,
AOS
-s, belts, plugs, mounts, etc. It is also a nice life-long Texas car. The car will get a PPI but is about 1,000 miles away from me so I will not have a chance to drive it.
I've driven some 07/08 cars and found the power to be more than enough for me. I know that the 07/08 motor has some changes over the 06, but I was wondering if I am REALLY going to feel much of a difference in regular and sometimes spirited driving. I will not be tracking the car. I am mostly looking to see if the midrange torque of the 06 motor will be adequate.
Opinions? Thanks in advance.

I personally chose the base 08, for all the reasons your thinking. It's had an engine replacement... walk away -keep looking. That car is for someone who doesn't care to do the footwork you have done. Those things will linger in your mind and these cars are ment to bring pure joy and they should. My .02 cents.
I don’t think your logic in the other parts that have been replaced on the car making it attractive is incorrect. However, I would wanna know a lot more about the donor engine. For me the price would have to be very attractive, remember, everything else has 80,000 on it. Ball joints, tie rod ends, all expensive to replace. However, if all the cars you are looking at are all in that mileage range, this car might need a little further investigation before you exclude it. That’s my two cents.
I haven’t ever heard much of 06+
ims
problems. I’ve read early 987 in 2005 has a different bearing, was changed mid year. I’ve had before and currently have a 2006 987.
I’d say you’d be good with 06 and up
987.1
. The variocam on the 07 and up to me was just another thing to stay away from on an older car. Just another item that’ll need attention.
Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to pull the trigger on a 2007 w/81k miles. Slightly rougher than I would have liked but not out of line for the mileage. The 06 car I was thinking about turned out not to be the garage queen I thought it would be, plus I had a hard time getting past the whole engine swap thing. It was a VERY early 06 so it had the bad
IMS
which blew up and took out the engine so it got a new-used engine a while back with an aftermarket
IMS bearing
. It probably would have been just fine, but the 07 ticked enough boxes so I went with it.
