Suggestion

Tried one of those bluetooth dongles that replaces the changer but couldn't get it to work because the PCM1.0 doesn't have an aux output option.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've just bought a lovely original 996 and want to keep the car as original looking as possible. Specifically, I don't want a different head unit. However, the CD autochanger (model CDC-3) doesn't change - it only plays disc 1. So I have three options and would welcome your thoughts on options 2 and 3: 1. Buy a reconditioned unit. £300 on E-Bay, so not hugely expensive, however: 2. Fix the current one. Get it out, clean it, and lubricate the mechanism. Has anyone done this and got any advice? I'm fine with fiddly things and have fixed iPhones, electronic toys etc. 3. Unplug it and fit a clever box that pretends to be an autochanger, with "CD 1" selected on the head unit accessing a folder on a connected USB stick called CD1 and playing the content, and so on. Solisto don't seem to make theirs anymore, but E-Bay have two options: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/36480132...teid=0&campid=&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1 (I'm told this will work with my head unit - I sent a photo) and a secondhand Solisto: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/29760834...teid=0&campid=&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1 However, whilst I haven't taken mine out yet, all the secondhand CDC-3 changers on E-Bay for the 996 and 986 show different connectors to those two E-Bay items. Does anyone know if they are indeed different and if adapters are available? Many thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Shameless plug, if it helps - I have a CDC-4 for sale, which I would happily take offers on. I haven't used it in just under 3 years as I bought the PCCM+ for my 997 when it came out. If I were you, would start with option 2 and take plenty of pictures for your own reference. There are plenty of folks on vintage computer forums who refurbish floppy drives and CD drives who can probably offer advice. Outside of picking the right grease (I used silicone grease on the one floppy drive I've restored...), cleaning materials, and making sure you know how to put it back together..... Not sure if any of the mechanisms are belt-driven, but you can usually find belts of the right size on the internet

POST 3Original post

I know you don’t want a new head unit, but …the Continental TR range is pretty inexpensive, give BT music and phone, and looks pretty authentic in the 996 (I used it in my 993 and 996 turbo)

POST 4Original post

not sure if this applies to you or not - i have the PCM1.0 with nav and CDC in my 2000 996. Tried one of those bluetooth dongles that replaces the changer but couldn't get it to work because the PCM1.0 doesn't have an aux output option. So i bought some cassettes on vinted for some retro tunes

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: it's now working perfectly, and I'm posting in case this is of help to someone else. As I posted on Wednesday, initially only CD1 would play, and 2-6 just said "no CD" when selected. I had a phone call today from the previous owner, having seen this thread, and he assured me that it worked just fine, which inspired me to have a jolly good go at troubleshooting it. After messing around, I realised that if it found a CD in slot 1, it never got beyond that. So I emptied it and put a CD in slot 6. That made it cycle through 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on its way to 6, which played. I'd never heard it cycle like that before - it declared no CDs were there without physically checking in a manner I could hear. So what I then did was add CDs in reverse order, one at a time, from 6 back to 1, and it now works perfectly. Many thanks to the previous owner for inspiring me to try.
