Leading evidence: 'finally' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'finally' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean engine and overall underbody, and properly treat/winterize' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Not much help we can be when the problem is just a faulty connection ( self induced)

So I installed a cruise control stalk and wired it on my 2004 C4S.

Also replaced a bunch of exhaust clamps/hardware that was badly rusted out.

They replaced the water pump with the one I had already ordered from Pelican, changed the coolant, pressure tested.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

issue fixed, but the cruise control they said still can't be activated, no retrofit possible.
So I installed a cruise control stalk and wired it on my 2004 C4S. No issues, went on long drive, plus it's turned into my daily. But of course it needed to be activated, so I dropped it off at the local Boblingen dealer yesterday.
Today, I get a call that they are having issues. They couldn't program it, and now the ignition and the immobilizer and transponder is/are giving them a hard time. They think it's due to the modern programmers they have, and have asked the main factory (a mere what, 30 minutes away?!) for an older model.
Any suggestions I may relay to them would be helpful. Or at least make me smart. That's a tall order, I know.
Update: dealer says that the issue started after they plugged in the PIWIS 4 to the car and updated the CDE and cluster, everything went haywire. Immobilizer, ignition, etc. They have asked to see if other dealers have an older PIWIS, but that they (in general) were made to send the old ones back to Porsche.
He also said that he thinks German spec cars were not able to be retrofitted with cruise control.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Interesting. Retrofitting cruise control. I'd don't see why not. Your case is easier than a 7.2. 7.2 the switch wiring goes back to the DME. In yours just to the cluster and Canbus takes it back to the DME. There is nothing behind the DME that needs to be added. They should be able to turn it on. If there is a problem, it'll throw a (non-cel) code but otherwise no issue.
Very sorry to hear they've possibly blown up your system. Very scary. I have my own PSWIS (I) I long ago started doing everything myself but sometimes, I'm lazy and just want an excuse to drive to Miami. Now I'll have to come up with something that absolutely, doesn't involve Porsche plugging in.
I hope they get all of this sorted out for you on their own phenning.
Do you have a wire going to the back of the cluster for the cruise system in pin C19? I had to add that additional wire when I put the manual cluster in after the 6 speed transmission swap.
I thought I had a photo on my phone. If you look in my transmission swap thread, youll see what Im talking about.

No such wire. Mine is a manual. The different guides I've seen, plus the one from pelican, don't mention anything other than the 4 wires from the control stalk, 3 to the cluster and one for the brake signal.
Dealer said that the DME was coded to a different country than germany, causing the issue.
issue fixed, but the cruise control they said still can't be activated, no retrofit possible.
I finally got my hardware to use the PIWIS III and was able to code instrument panel and CDE for cruise control. Alas it still does not engage (though I now get the cruise control light to turn on briefly when the car starts). I must recognize the possibility that my wiring is not right.
go to the inputs tab and see whats going on. Check to see if the clutch pedal and brake switch circuits are open or closed. The value will change in real time when you hit the clutch and/ or brake pedal
Issue is finally fixed. It was my tap into the B7 fuse that was deficient. I now have a cruise control that I can turn on and off, set the speed, cancel at the stalk, reduce the speed.
Yeah, I can't increase the speed (at least not smoothly like I can decrease speed) so I guess something is pinching. I will need a second wind to remove the steering wheel and all that. But since I have a 99% functional cruise, I am as happy as can be.
Turns out the stalk is working just as it should. I'm just so used to my other car where's pushing the stalk up increases speed that I didn't realize the up movement does nothing on the 996.
All is well.
Well, except that the car decided to purge itself of so coolant on a little simple Sunday drive. Great....
Burp
Update: No hose failures. They replaced the water pump with the one I had already ordered from Pelican, changed the coolant, pressure tested. No issues. Also replaced a bunch of exhaust clamps/hardware that was badly rusted out. Winter project: clean the engine and overall underbody, and properly treat/winterize.
I happen to now be due for an oil change, gonna do that tomorrow. Provided I find no surprises there, this should be the end of this episode.
You are not gonna wanna hear this. When Ive seen this before, for example, replacing a module and not fixing the problem, the problem is in the wiring harness itself. Basically they need to replace all your wiring harnesses, or at least the ones that are connected through the main vertebrae of the car. Its a shame.
nah, it was just the water pump. I do have a house by the engine that needs replacing, and as of today, how timely, i think my expansion tank may be due for replacement. Nothing wrong on the wiring side.
As far as the cruise control, it's been flawless once i figured out that it's only a 3 way switch.
