Looking at the old support plate in the picture above, if I had done this in the first place I would have got away without changing anything.

The pads and discs were 7 years old and the inside faces of the discs were looking ragged so due a change within the next year.

Now this is the frustrating bit - I have replaced the shoes, all the springs (which cost nearly £70 for 4 on each side), the plate the shoes sit on (996 352 807 00), pad and discs (Brembo) and the problem persists.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

4 months ago i heard a slight squeak, squeak, squeak noise from the LH rear when driving and it sped up as the speed increased. It got louder if I pulled the parking brake lever and stayed loud until I reversed and pulled the handbrake. On hearing a slight clunk the noise would stop forwards or backwards until I applied the parking brake again and the car rolled forwards slightly. Obviously the shoes were moving out of place in the forward motion and reseating in reverse. Now this is the frustrating bit - I have replaced the shoes, all the springs (which cost nearly £70 for 4 on each side), the plate the shoes sit on (996 352 807 00), pad and discs (Brembo) and the problem persists. I have checked the installation with the other side. I have adjusted the parking brake - turn the adjuster until the drum wouldn't turn then slacken it by 5 clicks and also the parking brake lever ( slacken off cable then pull lever up by 2 clicks and tension the cable until the drum just starts to rub). I have checked that when the lever is off, there is no tension on the lever acting on the shoes. I am at loss what else it could be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Is the dust shield making contact with the disc? I've had those symptoms on a NA 996 and that's what it was.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When i took the disc off, there was this scrape on the face where the brake shoes make contact

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think it is this plate that sits proud when the the car rolls forward then moves back when the handbrake is applied when I reverse the car.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The old plate I took off shows a polished edge.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just to update everyone, I removed 2mm of the arrowed edge and the one at the bottom with a Dremel and the problem has been solved. Looking at the old support plate in the picture above, if I had done this in the first place I would have got away without changing anything. However, the brake shoes on my car were original and looked 15 years old. The metal part of the shoes were starting to rust. The pads and discs were 7 years old and the inside faces of the discs were looking ragged so due a change within the next year. I would have got away without spending an extra £100 on springs though. I got a good discount from my OPC. If not it would have cost £75 per side for the 4 springs and shoe support plate.
