Might sound like stupid question, but is there an issue with replacing the condensers & drier then driving to get the system re-gassed ?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

More help needed please. After the hotter weather of recent days My 2001 C2 has developed a bearing whine when the AC is on. If the fans is on with the engine off there is no whine. Its been suggested on this forum, that re-gassing could be the solution. Has anyone else had this & if so how did you deal with it ? Many thanks in advance.
Apart from this annoying whine , she is driving beautifully
It will temporarily but you have to find the cause of the problem first. Very likely leaky condensers. Have a search on the forum about inspecting/replacing them first.
Hi There,
I had the exact same on my 2002 C4 and a re-gas did stop the noise, but only for a few months. With mine once I removed the front bumper I could see the condensors were stained in the corners from leaking and there was a lot of crud collected between them and the rads. I bought a pair of condensors from Design911 and then had my local A/C garage fit them and re-gas. I have had no issues since and that was 20 months ago. I did fit wire mesh to the back of the bumper to prevent a future build up of crud, which seems to have worked and can't be seen unless you get up very close with a torch.
Agree with the above. I had the same issue a couple of years ago - a regas temporarily stops the noise, but it will come back as the condensers will be slowly leaking. New condensers with regas will do the job permanently and some stealth grills fitted behind the front PU will prevent further crap build up against the condensers. Still need to clear it out regularly though.
Hi Paul,
Mine was done Oct 2016 - parts cost was approx. £550 for 2 condensers, O-rings, a regas and some grills. Labour was about £200 or so. It is possible to do it yourself, just depends on how confident you are. Hope that helps.
JK
If you want to DIY, you can get condensers off eBay for £30-70 each depending on if you want the generic or OEM ones.
A grill big enough to cover the whole front bumper is under £20 from Halfords.
£60 for a regas.
Thanks again all, I'm thinking of doing this my self. Are there any little nuggets of info that I should know before attempting this ? Is it just a case of changing the condenser rads or is it
more evolved ?
Cheers
I did it myself on my 996. Quite simple using the how to guide on this forum and YouTube it needed. Only hassle was refitting the bumper on my own as it's very flexible. Get someone to help you. Take a picture of how it seats with respect to the lights - as I spent ages trying to align it now knowing how it was meant to go back.
The only other slightly difficult bit is cutting and fitting the protective mesh afterwards. Use thick rubber gloves!
Places like Zunsport premake them if you prefer.
