changed the optimal tolerance of the water temp gauge starting with 987 & 997 to not move from 175 unless the temp gets above 235.
Leading evidence: 'Replace optimal tolerance of the water temp gauge starting' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ) and am expecting' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As owner of a

, the dash does not have an oil temperature gauge, only water/coolant. I am thinking of getting a hold of an add-on standalone gauge from 997 Research, but in the interim, how would one know when the oil is at optimal operating temperture before engaging in a spirited drive? I read that the coolant/water gauge should read at TDC (175) but that doesn't necessarily correlate to oil temperature...unless I am mistaken?
I know these engines can be a bit "delicate" from a procedure standpoint to keep the doom and gloom at bay lol.
Without accurate gauges, you can only guess when the car is ready for spirited driving. As you point out, the built in coolant gauge is not accurate and there is no oil temp gauge. After I got the gauge from 997Research, I was able to see that the coolant gauge reads at 175 even when the actual coolant is in the 140’s. At that time my oil temp is usually in the 110’s or 120’s.

Of course, the question of when one can drive in a spirited fashion depends upon things like the ambient temp, whether the car was stored outside or garaged before starting, the kind of driving being done during warm up, etc.
In the warmer weather with temps in the 70’s, it usually takes about 10-12 min of driving for my oil temp to get to 150. That’s when I put it in Sport mode. Then another few min for oil to reach 180 which I consider fine for hard driving.
Note: I have a manual and try to keep my revs in the 2500-3000 ish range during warm up. Keeps the engine safe and warms it optimally.
You need to define "optimal" since there is some disagreement to what is "warm enough" for the oil.
While there is no gauge, you can access that data with a suitable tool. I used my
Foxwell
when I first got it to read this, and gather some data. Here is a post I had about oil temps with it:

Feel free to look through the rest of that thread for my "work" with the data. That said, IMO, once the coolant gauge hits the center mark, I'm good to go. Yes, the oil has a little more time to get to fully-stable temp, but by then it's also already past the temp where it's at the "desired" viscosity... hence I think it's fine.
I guess when I mentioned "optimal" I meant for spirited driving to engage the upper rev range safely...not tracked at all. I am sure the warm up for tracking would be entirely different.
I do go by the TDC water gague mark as the good to go signal as well, but tend to gradually being it in, not foot down immediately. My morning commute usually is quite fast and slow in spots so rarely do I get a good long run at speed. The evening commute even worse...barely out of 3rd gear lol.
As for viscosity, I use 5W 40. Will be swithing to Driven DT40 on the
next
change as I just ordered a case for the Fall change out.
If you're really concerned or interested, the only way to get what you seek for YOUR car is to do UOAs (used oil analysis)... I do that every time. I also extend my OCI (oil change interval) because the oil can easily last about 10k miles for non-tracked usage, which is what I do as well. My practices (waiting only until coolant is at midpoint) have shown perfectly fine UOA results, over the ~45k miles I have on the car so far (bought at 75k, currently at 120k). I also use any synthetic oil... M1 preferred, but others have shown great results as well (including Wolf's Head, as I recall). 5w40 here as well.
I definitely plan on UOA this fall. Having only go thte car last summer, and with an unplanned
AOS
failure prior to storage, the UOA unfortunately was not in the cards.
The 5W 40 I am currently using is the

Leitchlauf HIgh Tech.
A scan tool should be able to read oil temp I would think. At least if you take a reading you should be able gauge the correlation between the two liquids

I use a Scan Gauge II which plugs into the
OBDII
, mounts perfect in the bottom center console opening and it provides true water temps. With a center radiator, my
987.1
runs 190 with AC on driving on level hwys above. Gets up to 205-210 climbing mtns during 80-90 deg days.
For a oil temp gauge, I'm in the process of installing a oil temp gauge
next
to the center console and using the
LN engineering
spin on oil filter adapter that has a oil side port for a 1/8 NPT temp probe.
Hope to post a write up and photos soon.
I am in Schwinn’s camp. Needle pointing up is party time. I appreciate his look into the data and giving a good rule of thumb on how long casual driving takes before the engine is ready to go. Fortunately, my commute plays nice with this.
It doesn’t take much to get oil to a reasonable viscosity (is higher oil pressure really a bad thing?), and it seems like watching coolant as a proxy for internal engine clearances is the way to go. Despite the coolant gage being “dumbed down” to placate the worry warts, it is still a useful guide for responsible engine treatment.
Although a bit off topic, I’ve also been looking at oil analyses, and for my use case (daily driver, highway heavy miles), I’ve been extending my oil change interval (was at 6k, then 7k read exactly the same, waiting to 8k for the

Depends on the vintage.. as 997Research (a member here) has pointed out - there is no oil temperature sensor on the
987.1
cars, that was added with the .2 cars (2009 on..)
