Hello everyone,
I own a 2010
Porsche 987.2
S with
PDK transmission
. It's been a while since the transmission fluid was last changed, and I'm looking for advice from people who have been through this.
I know there's a lot of debate about "lifetime" fluids, but I've also read that neglecting
PDK
maintenance is the quickest way to invite major problems. I'm concerned about the "mixed opinions" I've heard online - especially the idea that changing the transmission fluid can cause problems.
What's your experience?
Follow the maintenance schedule.
"
Porsche
officially recommends a
PDK transmission
fluid change every 120,000 miles or 12 years. However, independent
Porsche
specialists strongly recommend a more proactive schedule of every 40,000 to 60,000 miles (or 4 to 6 years), whichever comes first, to ensure longevity and prevent expensive mechatronic failures" - Sounded good to me. I did mine transmission at 60K at the dealership. 13K miles later and shifts smooth as butter.
Change at 40k miles or keep a blank check handy. It's just not that complicated $200 for DIY, $500-600 for an independent or enjoy the fresh coffee at the dealer for even more money.
Agreed with the replace more often. It is a pretty simple drain and refill with a little bit of a procedure in the refill. I’ve done this in my driveway without the computer/
PIWIS
, but using that is the preferred option to monitor transmission fluid temp.
As far as I can tell, there is no real downside to a basic drain/refill, and one of the weaknesses of the
pdk
is fouling of the position sensors inside. Draining the fluids helps flush contaminants that can build up on the hall sensor magnets in there. High temps from aggressive and extensive track use are another way to damage the
pdk transmission
, but there are cooler kits for that.
I think street use every 5 years just like coil packs and plugs.
The
987.2
factory recommended change interval is every 60,000 miles for the control circuit/clutch fluid (a modified ATF fluid) and every 120,000 miles for the gear oil, and the control circuit pan/filter (change while doing the fluid).
That's the official word. I believe the
981
this was changed to pan/filter every 60,000 miles with control circuit fluid, but since I don't own one I don't have the manual.
People recommend more frequent changes. I guess it's possible some wear particulate from the clutches could get into the control circuit fluid, but I doubt if those are magnetic particles. IIRC the distance sensors live in the other half, where the gear oil is. Perhaps a more frequent change of the gear oil might be in order since some metallic/magnetic particles could get worn off the gears and into the fluid.
Hello Gilha,
You may want to read the DYI posts created by JJRichard, they are an excelent source for technical advise, he has a section dedicated for
PDK
service!

I’m going to repost these two images because they helped me while I was preparing to do my own service.
If you are doing HPDE regularly ( say 6-8 per year) it might be wise to flush every other year. That's my frequency for my
987.2
.
Since it is a tricky fill I let my mechanic do it. You should find one that has a
PIWIS
since it is temperature dependent.
There is also a filter in the bottom of the transmission pan that can be replaced. The kit is sold on AutohausAZ
