Had to change a high pressure power steering line not long ago which meant the removal of the aircon compressor so at least I know it's not too bad a job .

Know this may sound daft but I want to run up the engine without the airbox in situ as I want to trace a noisy bearing, possibly from a pulley. Is this possible/ ok to do. I don't want to drive off anywhere just run and carefully observe the pulley/ belt run. Car is a 996C4S. Many thanks Simon
The MAF is fitted to the air filter housing, so you'll have to unplug it. It will struggle to idle properly, and will probably give you a check engine light, but will go out when re-connected and run for a short while. It shouldn't do any harm, but keep everything clear of the throttle body, and mind the pulleys and belts.
Thanks Richard. Managed to locate problem to air con compressor. New one needed so much searching to be done for best price. Part is Denso 7SBU16C. Price varies wildly. Simon

Will be removing the old one at the weekend. Had to change a high pressure power steering line not long ago which meant the removal of the aircon compressor so at least I know it's not too bad a job .
Thanks Andy. Have already checked them out. Seems to be the going rate , have found one for £445 delivered but there is also one on EBay with the correct Denso part no. albeit for a Skoda of the same year as my C4S. Have asked the guy for more pictures and pulley dia. Its new and unused and a good price. Seems this compressor is used quite widely on BMW, Mercedes and the Volkswagen Audi group.
