It's hard to tell as you're not focused on them but they look like the original rusted studs and nuts to me, they have probably already been replaced with bolts on the other side.

I previously didn’t think you could get mild steel hot enough using butane or map gas but it seems prolonged exposure can make it almost red hot.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Happy New Year everyone. I have a 996.2 Targa, the exhaust and manifolds are very rusted and need changing. On one side of engine there are normal M8 manifold bolts, but on the other I have what looks like heavily rusted male Torq bolts, but I am unsure. Please see attached picture. Just wondered if anyone had seen anything like them before and can help identify what they are. Thanks

POST 2Original post

HNY! What ever the fastener, they are heavily rusted. There are a number of threads on this - my advise would be if there is no leak then leave them alone. If you want to change/upgrade the headers then be prepared for quite a few of the fasteners to need drilling out. This will require the use of a jig to ensure no damage to the engine casings. Have a search - someone will be along shortly with a link I am sure. Have fun

POST 4Original post

ETorx? If you think it's an ETorx then maybe buy a set of etorx sockets and try your manifold bolts, they might come loose. Do not try to undo them they will snap off and become a nightmare, if you want to change the headers ring round a few Porsche garages and get a quote and book it in.

Thanks for the reply. I have seen a lot of threads/videos and the horror stories relating to snapped bolts. Its a real dilemma, as I plan on doing a few european trips this year. So think I just need to bite the bullet and invest in a jig etc.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2776958

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right, they do look like heavily rusted etorx that someone has already had a go at and rounded them. I will start with a set of torx sockets, in the knowledge that they will probably snap and I'll have to invest in a jig etc.

POST 9Original post

Take it easy don’t over do it and fingers crossed some, or all, come undone. If they don’t at least you know what you’re looking at. I’ve recently seen someone sorting seriously rusted cat bolts, on a 991, using a butane gas torch and by getting the nut almost red hot. I previously didn’t think you could get mild steel hot enough using butane or map gas but it seems prolonged exposure can make it almost red hot.

POST 10Original post

Someone else here (Uncle Monty I think) has had success with a very low force impact driver on these bolts. But there needs to be enough of something to be able to get a socket etc onto. I assume by your enthusiasm to take this job on that you are handy with a bit of DIY maintenance. Plenty of folks to reach out to for advise on this forum if you do.

POST 11Original post

All but one manifold bolt came out for me and they were in reasonable condition. As i have renewed the 11 other bolts i'm going to get a garage to drill it out with use of a jig. Garages and serious DIY's now used an Induction heated bolt tool which you can get on Amazon for around £160 to heat up the bolt prior to turning. If you are planning to do a lot of unbolting, it maybe worth considering.

Those induction tools look great, I’ve been so tempted by them in the past.

POST 13Original post

2points to remember, depth and being off centre thats why a jig is essential.

POST 14Original post

My local MOT garage and repair centre owner told me he bought one a few months ago and wished he had bought it earlier. I think "Interference fit" on here also has one and used it to do all his suspension work last year.

I have just spent 3 weeks removing my rusted exhaust manifolds and silencers and fitting a DesignTek system. Although really hard work, I am very pleased with the outcome and car sounds great. I used the Stomski kit, as someone on the forum advised and it was invaluable. I have produced a series of videos showing the process and the issues I came up against and hope this may be of use to anyone contemplating the job themselves. Youtube videos
