I have now polished the black casing and then took out all three inspection covers and run a little vaseline on each rubber seal, so that if I ever have to remove them to replace the bulbs behind them I can without breaking my nails or more importantly the shell of the head lamp.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have now owned this car for coming up 4 years, and each winter I take it off the road and do some preventative maintenance to keep it in pristine condition.
In the first year, I took off the callipers and had the broken bleed nipples removed and replaced with new ones, and new seals through out. New discs and pads and all new parts to prevent squeal when braking ........................£3000.
In the second year, the engine was removed and completely rebuilt into a 4 litre with all new parts .........£27000.
In the 3 rd year you may recall the complete suspension overhaul, and any other work required, like replace rusty brake pipes, new wheel bearings, abs sensors etc,,...,...........£7000.
Now this winter, the car has gone away to a paint shop to have several areas repainted a dent repaired and both bumpers repainted. Approximate bill £6000.
I never drove a new one, but it is a real joy to behold. Last September we went with 14 other Porsches nearly all of them far newer, and it did not miss a beat, everyone who followed said it sounded great on full throttle, it was the second quickest on the German autobarn with 173 mph, the fastest was 181 mph, so not much slower, but 20 years older.
So in answer to your remark yes it is a very nice car and it will look brand new in every respect.
I had a phone call just before Christmas, informing me that they had taken the front wing off the car and taken a look at the extent of the rust once the paint had been removed and a clear picture of the rust was evedent.
Would I like it made good with new metal welded in once the old had been removed, or do I want a new wing ??
I popped in to have a chat.
Moo75x, dont be sad, these cars are now 26 years old, they will have signs of rust, it's just a case of getting to it early before it renders the car to expensive to repair.
For those who use their cars all year round, be aware, that's all I will say.
oh i get that - its just never nice to see...............i am just on with fettling bit in the arches of mine - some new underseal landed yesterday ready for action, then several coats of paint and wax atop that. Cant ever keep that tin worm at bay but you can do what you can.
I live in Suffolk and use Pie performance as my indy to look after work that I cant do.
They had an open morning one Sunday and Paul of PW body repairs was there. He is their man the send porsches too if the owners need work done.
Their workshop is near Colchester, Essex. If you need a contact number and full address, I will post it on here.
Bit far from me (I'm up near Glasgow) as I suspected, but there is a friend in Aberdeen who is good at this stuff and has offered to sort mine for me - it's much the same work as yours, crusty bolts and checking / sorting the rust starting to appear ... life in the salty, damp west of scotland to blame!
Whilst my head light was removed from the car whilst they get on with cutting out rusty metal, I bought it home to clean and polish the clear lens of that yellow hue that they suffer from, in old age.
I used 800 grit wet and dry first, and then increased it to 1200 grit wet and dry to get this far. My next job is to have a read up on here and find out what I need next. Watch this space.
Further to my last reply, I have ordered two polishing compounds, a G3 heavy to medium cut, and G10 fine. I look forward to the next part of this head light cleaning lark.
I have reached the highest of axxl behaviour with this head light.

Happy days !
Great effort. Impressed with your financial commitment to the 996
I used the Sylvania kit on my C4s lights and the results were superb. Still looking good after 6 months and no obvious discoloration
