Looking online the usual culprit is the motor module so I swapped left and right and confirmed that was the issue.

My passenger side mirror stopped dropping down when I went into reverse, a feature I had got used to. Looking online the usual culprit is the motor module so I swapped left and right and confirmed that was the issue. Much to my dismay the replacement 8 pin memory modules are eye wateringly expensive, especially when you consider you can get an equivalent non memory part for around £10. I spotted the BMW E46 also had a very similar looking 8 pin memory mirror and these are about a quarter the price of one for a 996 (99662404800), so I took a gamble bought one and plugged it in. It did not behave, it moved in diagonals rather that left right, up down, however the memory function did seem to be working in its own way. Time to open up and compare. the BMW part has additional solder joiners to a common rail, left out on the Porsche design and what looks like ferrites across the motor. so I reverse these differences by mopping up the solder and removing the ferrites (probably unnecessary, but they weren't on the Porsche part). plugged it back in and it works perfectly, mirror drops on reverse, memory functions set correctly. couldn't be happier, new mirror from the OEM manufacturer for a fraction of the cost.
