I’m supposed to be changing the front transverse brake pipe after it failed - until this distraction!

I’ve had the scuttle panels off to replace the heater matrix and noticed that on the top of the inner wing, (under the outer wing) below the windscreen it looks like the seam sealant is peeling off.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good evening all. My first post regarding my new to me 996 C4 (99). I’ve had the scuttle panels off to replace the heater matrix and noticed that on the top of the inner wing, (under the outer wing) below the windscreen it looks like the seam sealant is peeling off.
Is this likely to cause problems? There is a bit of corrosion colouring there, although this could be from the fixing stud?
I was wondering whether to clear off the peeling bits and put some sort of waxoyl over it (or leave as is and put waxoyl over).
The area is just off this photo at the end of arrow.
It’s pretty grimy under there, so needs a clean regardless….
Grateful for the thoughts of the forum.
I'd clean it up and see what it's like i think it looks worse than it is, maybe it's just dried out and gone crusty. On the other side you need a new foam cover for the matrix or you may get water leaking in.
Thanks, I’ll report back once it’s cleaned up.
I’ve got a replacement cover for the heater (13 GBP from eBay). That’s a good point about water from outside potentially getting in. Made me wonder if it was a leak from the matrix after all…but the crusting on it did have th red coolant tinge.
So…I’ve cleaned it out a bit. Not the best sight in the world. More corrosion than I was hoping for.
Got rid of as much loose material as i could….
I was beginning to wonder if it was the result of some kind of repair? Sent the endoscope in between the inner/ outer wing. It was quite hard to orientate what i was looking at but I couldn’t see any obvious sign of damage or repair.
There was one area that looked like it had some sealant missing…..more corrosion inside there:
I’ve initially just applied Kurust to the bit on top that I can access and will probably apply some sort of waxoyl or dinitrol over the top.
As for the bit inside the wing…it will require the wing off which I’ll have to do a bit of research on.
I’m supposed to be changing the front transverse brake pipe after it failed - until this distraction! Hopefully I’ll have it all back together soon.
Have to say I’m a little concerned about corrosion in these seams, overall the car is not a rust bucket but will keep my eyes open as i work round the car.
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
