Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone lay up or otherwise store their Porsche over the winter season? If so, any specific reasons why? Not judging or anything, just curious. I use mine throughout the year come rain, shine, snow or whatever else I happen to drive through. Whilst there is an element of being a bit more "sensible" in the colder/more slippery months I'd rather have a slow winter drive in the Porsche than none at all. Thoughts? Discuss?

POST 2Original post

I try and use them at least once a month so look for dryer days when the roads haven't been salted for a while. If there's loads of snow I've got an old 4wd Mazda or a tractor.

POST 3Original post

Mine is used everyday unless snow is on the ground, then I use alternative transport. I asked when I bought my 987.1 if they were ok to use everyday? I was told it was better to use them. It would be nice to lay it up over winter, but for now thats not an option.

POST 4Original post

This is my 1st winter with the 996. I'm not exactly laying her up , but as above, more than likely not use her when the snow is here or there is salt about. Indeed I can wait for a Bright dry crisp winters day to just drive .... with no particular place to go !! PS a Golf is the daily driver..

POST 5Original post

As talked about in the other thread, it's not that I'm laying up, but because I garage it, I dont really want to be in a position where it's put away wet, covered in salt and road grime, staying damp in the garage and I don't really want to have to wash each time before re-garaging. If there's a crisp clear day and like any day I'd have in the summer to go out with sun out and top down I will, but ideally if roads not been salted for a period (and as stated above), or at least been weather to clear the majority of it away and I know I will have time to rinse it off/clean it before staying in the garage wet, for an unknown period before going out again. If I stored the car outside or used it a few times a week, it wouldn't bother me as much.

POST 6Original post

Mine is a 2nd car, but like to drive it as much as I can. Earlier in the year I specifically drove it on a snow day to work. Faultless. The only time I avoid are wet roads with salt.

POST 7Original post

I dont have a garage, so mine is on the drive under a proper breathable cover. I'll give her a run out every few days because I dont want a flat battery or rusty discs, but only if it's dry whenever possible.

POST 8Original post

Mine stays in the garage for most of the time during the winter under a cover, but I keep it taxed and insured so that I can take advantage of the 'odd' fine dry crisp day. It is on life support (conditioner ! ) since I have had a number of experiences of flat battery due to not using it enough. Interestingly, after returning from a two week holiday recently, both (everyday) cars on the drive were flat, and I had to jump start them from the 996 - it's times like this that the engine in the rear is a bonus ! Chris

POST 9Original post

Over the winter months I tend to take mine out only when completely dry and free from salt. I originally planned to garage it completely from early December until around spring but my will power always fails me! Simon

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A timely thread, as there is a poll in January's PP on exactly this topic. Best wishes to you all this festive season and I hope you and your loved ones (even those without 4 wheels) have a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year! JK

POST 11Original post

I use mine as much as I can. Every Saturday without fail and as OP said I also drive to the conditions. I alays get the car up to temperature which means some trips are longer than needed and when I put it away in the garage I park it in gear rather than with the handbrake to avoid the pads binding. I had the garage waxoil the areas that need to be proofed like the top of the struts etc. My rule of of thumb is drive it regularly and use the full rev range and capability to fullest enjoyment. That way any bills I have to pay are even more worth it. I know now that the 996 has a reputation for a ‘glass’ engine but wow it delivers. Also has anyone seen what the air cooled chaps have to pay for the ’routine’ tip end rebuild ?? Did I mention I love my car? Ultimately it’s down to choice which is another great thing about this club and Porsche ownership, we’re a diverse bunch who are passionate about our car(s) and the marque. That’s pretty cool by any measure!

POST 12Original post

Evening all just a quick one .... my 996 is not laying up actually she’s out tomorrow for breakfast at caffeine and machine around 11 ish .... anyone fancy a coffee ? Sorry about the short notice .... we act on impulse. Paul Deb and P2VDL

POST 14Original post

What winter? Seriously, the weather and roads have been very car friendly lately. As many know, they don't tend to run as well if not used often enough. My 964 had a quiet year throughout 2017 and it did not run as well as previously. Plenty of use throughout '18 and it's back 'on-song'. Plus it's very enjoyable, of course.

POST 15Original post

Just finished an ‘archliners out’ clean of the underside and coated everything with ACF 50. It will be interesting to see how this fares over the next few months but I am confident that it is now well protected. (The stuff that got on the exhaust redefined the meaning of a smokey start up) Given my car is only just over three years the amount of crud removed was amazing and I suspect potentially more damaging than salty roads. Quite a build up especially around the bottom of the front radiator fans.

POST 16Original post

Lol, ACF sure does create a lot of smog, but I cover the headers on mine too.

POST 17Original post

Mine's my daily driver, and sits outside on the drive. I clean the road dirt and salt off every couple of weeks, but otherwise just use it like any other car; it's the "everyday supercar" after all!
