Hi All,
Hoping for a bit of confirmation. I've picked up a 2011
Cayman 2.9L
. Beautiful car and love it to bits. It is however a little bit poorly.
The car has a misfire on Cylinder 2. Only happens after the car is warm and has been left to sit for a few minutes. It has 120K miles so I suspect the ignition coils are starting to go. Well I hope so!
Planning on getting it jacked up in a couple days once a replacement coil has arrived (Yes I will replace the other 5 if the issue is resolved). I just wanted confirmation on which side I should be working on.
I'm based in the UK but from what I've seen online and researched, if I'm facing the
rear
of the car, I should be removing the right wheel (Drivers side UK)? With the second cylinder being in the middle.
Thanks
.
Assuming you are standing behind the car, that's correct. Bank 1 is on the right side. Plug 1 is at the front of the engine. We need to use caution when searching for Porsche info online since the 911 mounts the engine backwards.
Thank you for confirming, the
911
being 180 degrees is exactly why I needed to ask haha. Despite all the manuals I have for this car. I couldn't find any info about the banks!
I knew I had saved this image that I grabbed from somewhere. It should apply to all
Porsche
flat 6 engines. Just note the orientation of the belt driven accessories to determine the front of the engine.
I strongly advise replacing them as a set, individual coil changes have often been a problem I was informed about by professional mechanics. When Ford had the 4/4 split coils on the 5.0 V8 changing four always caused a problem; that was told to me by a professional wrench with more than 46 years in his shop. You’re getting free labor and in case they are old? Do all of them preventively, it’s a bit of a trip to get there anyhow. I’d do the plugs too to be honest, good luck.
That’s my plan. The car is booked in for its service in 2 weeks. Ideally I need to be able to have it make the 45 minute journey. Hence the 1 replacement.
I’m capable of replacing the one coil. I’ll have the professionals do the plugs and the other 5.
