Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi everyone, I’ve decided it’s time to change the transmission fluid and filter on my 2011 Boxster/Cayman 987.2 (Base 2.9L). From what I understand, the filter is integrated directly into the oil pan itself, meaning the entire pan needs to be replaced as a single unit rather than just swapping out a separate filter element. Before I pull the trigger, I have a few questions for those who have done this DIY: Gaskets & Hardware: Does the replacement pan usually come with the gasket pre-installed, or do I need to purchase the gasket and new aluminum pan bolts separately? (I'm planning to buy the parts from Design911). Calibration/Adaptation: I've read that after refilling the fluid, a PDK calibration or adaptation process via a diagnostic computer (like PIWIS or an advanced scanner) is required. Is this absolutely necessary just for a fluid/pan change, or is it only needed if the transmission was having shifting issues? Fitment: What is the safest way to ensure I am ordering the exact right part number for my specific 2.9L model on Design911? Are there any other tips, torque specs, or specific things I should know before tackling this job? Thanks in advance for the help! https://www.design911.co.uk/p/gearb...-porsche-987-cayman-987-boxster-991-997-gen2-9g132102500-9g132102501-9p1321359/

POST 2Original post

How many miles does your car have? If it’s on the low side you can avoid recalibration by doing a drain and fill on gear oil and clutch fluid, just offering another option. You’d have all new lubricants. My wager is you would need an and appropriate scan tool to actuate the transmission in a sequence after doing a pan and filter change. I’m pretty sure that’s what I read when considering same. If you do a search, you will see some photos I posted of the transmission drains from each side, as well as the coolers, it’s helpful. If you can’t find it let me know and I’ll drop it again in this thread, good luck.

POST 3Original post

The car is a 2011 model with 110,000 km (around 68,000 miles)

POST 4Original post

If the transmission is working smoothly? You might want to consider a drain and fill, run it and see how it performs from there, it would probably be fine and more than most owners would do. If you want to be extra vigilant, like I said, there is a sequence to be performed. If you go for the pan and filter change I’m confident that will require PIWIS or an equivalent but I could be mistaken. I’m sure somebody else will weigh in, I believe I’ve read threads where people have done the complete job. Stay tuned someone will reply.

POST 5Original post

I second a drain and fill. Many have said the filter in the pan is a coarse filter so it’s likely just fine. I am not touching that pan unless there is a leak or an issue. Drain and fill only for me for now.

POST 6Original post

Drain and fill is what I did on a 2011 Turbo S, with 42K miles.... but over 12 years on the clock. I followed the attached process, w/o PWIS . I also carefully measured the in and out on the fluid... and purchased a laser pyrometer.... for fluid temp.

POST 7Original post

There are two calibrations on the PDK . The one requiring the PIWIS is only called for when components are changed. There is a risk when doing this of it becoming uncalibrated. The filter change does not call for this. The other calibration is the shift parameters that are set to how you drive the car. There's a complex dead-chicken* routine, posted somewhere here by me - long ago - about how to do this with the ignition key and opening and closing the door in a certain sequence. It does reset it, but the transmission rather quickly adapts to how your driving it again, so it's kinda worthless to do. Change the fluids. Be happy. You saved about $500 dealer dollars.

POST 8Original post

Fwiw, I replaced my pdk pan and topped up the fluid with no piwis or special tools. Agreed that changing the pan is generally not necessary as the filter is only catching (relatively) big chunks which aren’t there if things are working correctly. no recalibration was needed for me after this pan/fluid swap.

POST 9Original post

Agree entirely. The "filter" in question is more like a strainer. Big gear teeth won't get through it. But that's about all it filters out. I didn't bother when I had mine done at 60k miles. And I doubt if I'll bother at 120k miles.

POST 10Original post

Thank you all so much for your replies. Basically, I am bringing my own oil pan and filter to the shop. The mechanic is charging me $750 for the labor, fluid, and the PDK calibration. From what I understand, this specific shop services most of the local Porsche community here in Israel. It's a price I'm willing to absorb, especially since it is much cheaper than a total transmission overhaul. On the other hand, many of you mentioned that you only did a simple drain and fill without replacing the pan. I am a bit conflicted. I am very particular about my car, but it only gets driven about 600–700 miles a year. I definitely want to avoid any transmission headaches or looking for trouble. What would you recommend in my situation? Stick with the full pan replacement and calibration, or just go with a drain and fill?

POST 11Original post

From my perspective, unless you have a pan leak, dropping the pan doesn’t really do much more than a simple drain and refill does. The very marginal benefits from pan replacement are that you can get the last little bit of old pdk fluid out, and there are magnets that collect a bit of sludge that would get replaced. And I guess the filter that has already been discussed. I am personally taking the approach to do a drain and fill of the clutch fluid at a more frequent rate, and not worrying about the pan/filter. Functionally, I see them as equivalent services, so do whichever will bring you the most confidence and joy in your ownership experience.
