Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1Original post

Does anyone know the purpose for this small thin metal rod?

POST 2Original post

Check your owners manual. The rod is there to release the key from the ignition switch in the event of a power failure. Try page 78, give or take.

POST 3Original post

My Boxster was missing the metal rod, so I fashioned one from a piece of wire coat hanger. Only thing to keep in mind is not all coat hangers are the same, some are slightly thicker and sturdier, while others are the thinner, bendier kind. Test each one out to see which one fits.

POST 4Original post

OK. Stupid question here is the metal rod supposed to insert in a pool that’s located where the ignition key goes in because there’s no hole accepted there. If it goes somewhere else then I’m embarrassed.

POST 5Original post

The hole where the rod gets inserted has a cover over it. Pry it off for insertion.

POST 6Original post

And then get ready to order a replacement cover ($15 a few years ago, for a piece of plastic the size of a grain or rice). They like to pop out and fly away, away, away, never to be seen again. You might stick some tape to it before trying to pry it out. Maybe the tape will make it easier to find. I never found the one that flew away.. for all I know it's down with @foodbiker in Florida..

POST 7Original post

Was that was what just flew by, and landed into my folks' swimming pool?

POST 8Original post

My cover has been lost ever since I got the car, so it's a common thing. I remembered to take a picture of it so people can see what hole is used to release the key: In summary, if your key is stuck, push a pin (or that tool) into the round hole under the cover (no cover in the above pic) and it should release the key...
