Hello All,
In a few weeks, I'm going to make a roadtrip and look at an '
06 Cayman S
with 130K miles. It is a very good price, and I expect normal wear and tear. The pics of the interior shows it is in pretty good condition (but we all know how photos are). I also noticed the fan control buttons are pretty worn, and look like the paint is coming off of them (?). I'm talking about the two rocker ones on either side that tilt up and down. See my photo below.
My questions are is this typical, and is it easily rectified? I'm looking at this
Cayman S
as an "inexpensive"
Porsche
to simply have fun with on HPDE days. But I know myself and think it will start bugging me until I try to fix them.
Thanks much,
Steve
Yup!

Climate Control Buttons Fix for Porsche 911, Boxster, Cayman - Under 2 minutes to replace them!
Just to confirm, that is a common issue. I had the same on my 2007 CS and successfully replaced them with aftermarket switches like the above. They have looked like new ever since!
Good to know. Thank you,
Steve
Can confirm that it is very typical, and there are a couple of online places you can find replacement buttons that are much more durable.
it does require you to remove the control panel unit faceplate/panel, but there are good tutorials and videos around that make it pretty straightforward.
My bad on the cleaning with isopropyl alcohol. I assumed you meant the round dial buttons. Disregard my recommendation.

Yeah, replacement switches can be found on
Amazon
, but there are basically 2 ways to remove and replace them. One way involves removing the CC unit. The quick and dirty way I seen on YouTube where you drill out the face of the switch, yank them out with a pick, and snap the new ones in.
I got the switches but haven't got around to the operation yet.
Looks a lot like my ‘06
Boxster
, except I’m also missing one of the radio control buttons It popped off a few months ago and I haven’t been able to find it. It’s in the car somewhere! Would those also fit my
Boxster
?
I got from
Amazon
looks good and works
I also replaced mine on my 2005 987 using what I found on
amazon
. To remove the old ones, I used the drill method referenced above, video for this is here:
It was nerve wracking drilling into the old buttons--it felt like I could break through and drill into something I can't see behind the button itself. But I just went slow and kept it controlled. I have a metal pick tool that I used to grab behind the hole and pull. Required more force than I would have expected but no harm done. New ones pop in very easily.
