I do recall looking at the high retained value of used 911s when I was in the market and using this as part of my reasoning for buying a new one in 2017.

Either you want a new Porsche (or any other car similar) and be able to spec it how you want or you bite your nose off to spite you’re face and buy something used which isn’t exactly what you want to avoid paying.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was told exactly the same story in September 2022 when I ordered my Cayman GTS 4.0. Not feeling in the slightest bitter, as I absolutely love it. However I did end up moving a 2021 Cayman 2.0 on a fair bit earlier than I really needed to, and I was very happy with that one too. I’m now wondering if I need to sneak in another tail end of “pure ICE car” purchase before the world changes forever.
In fairness, changes in Government policy are probably not helping the car manufacturers much. Similarly those invested in making sure vehicle charging infrastructure is available must be struggling to plan ahead.

If you're looking at taking delivery at some stage next year, I'd put your order in now with a view to taking delivery at a date suitable for you. Your OPC can do this and an allocation can be given based on this however, you may get a call if a slot becomes available earlier so be prepared to make a quick decision. You don't have to accept it but you do run the risk of missing out if they pull the plug sooner but OPCs will be given ample notice.
Better to get an allocation of say April rather than having to try and get one in June if they decide to end production in September.
Thanks for the replies. What are the chances of a small discount if demand dries up? We all see what's happening in the used market.
Are we subject to the the EU cybersecurity rules for new cars produced from July 2024? That would definitely stop production but it's a bit of a tightrope to walk.

Best chance of a discount is when they have just taken delivery of a car that the allocated owner then doesn’t take. There seem to be a couple of 911 Turbo S in that position at the moment, but of course the specs chosen might not suit many. They are also an awful lot of money even with £5k knocked off!
Back in the summer, my “old” 18 month old 718 Cayman 2.0 was up at the OPC I use, with about 9000 careful miles on it, for £4k more than I had paid for it new. I’m guessing they probably got at least list price for it. Unless that changes radically, they won’t discount a new one all the time they can get list price for a used one. However, 2024 looks set to be an “interesting” year, so who knows. As the song goes, “Money’s getting cheaper, prices getting steeper…”
No, EU regs won’t apply here now post Brexit, and I’ll not hold my breath for the current UK Government to adopt anything similar. I think most of what they expect for the EU is available as an option on some, if not most Porsches. My wife’s 2022 BMW seems to have all the mandatory “safety features” already. Luckily you can turn them off, because they can be very annoying. However collision detection has actually been helpful when I haven’t necessarily been looking where I am going… (Don’t ask. “Not my car, not my problem,” he was NEVER heard to say.
)
I honestly don’t think they are likely to stop 718 production for any of that. Easily engineered solutions, some of which Porsche won’t want to make standard until they absolutely have to.

If production of ICE 718's stop next year, it wont be replaced for some time as they are way behind schedule on software for electric versions of cars. Probably looking at 2025 for first cars ti be delivered.

The only way to make it sell is to give it a small battery to keep it light but then the range will not be any good so people won’t buy it. Wash and repeat.

Also bear in mind there are a few 0 miles, unregistered cars with various OPC's.
If getting one of the last registrations is important then you'll be rolling the dice either way as production might slow rather than stop.
I was told similar when I ordered but I wasn't that interested in getting one of the last ones, just getting one! SE was laying it on pretty thick that I might not get an allocation.
Best of luck!

I have heard 2025, the EV replacement has been delayed. There is a rumour going round they will make ICE Caymans alongside EV Caymans while if the demand is still there.

When did you first order and when was the car delivered? The SE will say anything to sell a car, whether it's true or not is anyone's guess. On a side note is it worth the money over your M2 CS?

Ordered Nov 21 - Delivered Nov 22
I can't make a comment against a M2 CS as mine was the humbler M2C however I can safely say that it was worth the money
to me
. I can't stress that highly enough, any purchasing decision is highly subjective. I could have replaced like for like and would have been perfectly happy but there's a "specialness" the Cayman GTS 4.0 has (in my eyes) that was lacking in the M2C (again in my eyes).
The difference was most stark with the interior and the handling balance as good as it is on the F87 M2C, can't compete with a bespoke mid engine platform.
Saying that though, the M2C is a billion times more practical, there's a big boot and space for adults in the back. However if its last ICE driving pleasure your after and practicality is taking a firm back seat (see what I did there?), Cayman all the way IMHO.
This interior versus the M2C's is a bit like comparing Business Class with Economy. There's no escaping the humble origins of the 2 series. Some M badges here and there don't make it special enough (IMHO).

I'm just hoping that by then someone with influence realises that carbon neutral E-fuel, made anywhere there'a water, air, and (renewable) electricity is the ultimate way forward, not EVs, then we can all sleep easy.
Pushing forward with EVs (Betamax) will delay the proper solution (VHS) but with the current backlash I read about almost everywhere the govenment/s have to wake up at some point, surely.
NB. The Betamax vs. VHS reference will only make sense if you're old.

One VW platform being behind doesnt mean that electric Cayman is behind and delayed.

That is a really bad analogy (yes old enough) because Betamax was a far better product technically, VHS suceeded only because whilst inferior to Betamax it was cheaper to sell for the masses because they didn't have to pay Sony anything to sell them.
Back to cars, IMO the EV other than possibly for city car use, is fundamentally flawed and therefore an inferior product and if it wasn't for the fact manufacturers have been forced to run with it EVs would never have sold in any volume on merit.
Back to the 718, why would Porsche be in a hurry to wrap it up, they are one of the few Porsche models still selling and they are at the cheapest point in the production run and with the 2030/2035 extension why not just facelift it?

I expect it will be fast. It will probably handle well. It may even be lighter than most EVs, but the issue for me will be range as any time I’ve driven quickly/enthusiastically in an EV there is a massive range impact. Granted that is also true to a certain extent for ICE vehicles, but those are far quicker to refuel (and fast chargers will likely be rare in areas where a car like this will be used for a run). A range of 250 - 300 miles which would be manageable with a non sporting EV driven with range in mind won’t cut it.

Interesting Comments and for me much to agree with . I bought a new Cayman GTS 4.0 last Saturday and its very much Business as usual down at the OPC with even some Price Reductions . Something I have noticed and was surprised about was the amount of Cayman GT4 currently for Sale certainly more available than the 4.0 GTS . Personally I found it really difficult to buy a well specced " untracked " example of the GT4 and in the end went for the GTS . Getting into a conversation with the Dealership last Saturday they tell me that they face the same issues .

Let's not forget those Cayman/Boxster owners who enjoyed road trips to North Wales. Cannot see that happening very easily. It's bad enough with the lack of Petrol stations round Snowdonia National Park, let alone imagine trying to get the car charged up for the trip back home due to limited range.
Having said this, maybe this was why the Welsh implemented the 20mph speed limits. They could foresee the lines of abandoned EV's run out of charge

Exactly - I have done road trips to Snowdonia, the Highlands and untold Eurohoons, complete non starters in an EV.
I run a car to go where I want how I want, take this random eg, how would this day have had to change for me to do it in an EV?
I won't be buying one - fact.
Lots will not buy but lots will. There was uproar when cars became turbo and pdk only. Still sold. Same with Cayenne and Macan when they first came out. I think we should buy what suits us and the manufacturers will learn to go where the market is.
I'm not an EV evangelist (how did this thread get to EV bashing?), far from it but my other car is an EV....
Would I replace my 718 with an EV, sure if it exceeded what I get from my current 718, if not I'll stick with it.
I'm 13k miles in on BEV, it regularly goes up to Scotland and has done a few long round trips, its the main car and for a while was the only car.
Done Wales etc and its an excellent bike transporter.
Yup, I get it, lots of people say "It can't do a 1000 miles on a single charge, I'm not interested"
I'm 2 years in so just for balance...:
Never ran out of charge
Had an issue charging it (even in Kilwinning)
Never felt the need to abandon it somewhere remote
At a rapid charger (>150kw) I'll get to 80% in the time it takes to go to the loo and grab a coffee
If you're the sort of person that wouldn't dream of booking a hotel in advance when driving abroad or doing any planning whatsoever then hey, an EV isn't for you but if you're the sort of person that looks at your road trips and where you want to stay etc it really isn't that bad.
Plus with the Tesla network opening up on their V4 chargers it's now 30% cheaper to charge up.
Looking at taking it Skiing next year once I've got some winters for it.
Just an alternate view.
On a road trip to Spain, every hotel I stopped at had EV charging

I said something very similar to this on a previous thread and the response was rather horrid I dont understand how they cant see it
Toyota are suggesting that they have a significant breakthrough with Solid State batteries which will supposedly be better in every way ... I'm sorry that you found the responses rather horrid ... I would love an electric Boxster to be a success but ? We shall have to be patient

As I find myself banging on about all over... with the ability right now to make carbon zero petrol/diesel from free air, free water, and cheap electricity anywhere in the world these exist, why go to all the bother of mining lithium, transporting it, building batteries, building EVs, scrapping EVs, spending billions on chargers nationwide?
Just put the development money into E-fuel and put it in a tanker/petrol station/ICE car. An endless cycle of recycling CO2, not one which uses up the Earth's precious resources to make batteries.
Oil's running out. Oh look... so is lithium, aluminium, unobtanium, etc...

At least it means those of us who keep an ICE car can sleep happy that we'll be putting carbon neutral petrol/diesel in our cars in a few years time, not killing the planet, and the supply will never run out.
I'd hope the building of new production facilities, the commercial availability of Zero fuel from 2025 (proposed), and the gradual lowering of fuel price to match that we pay for fossil fuel will usurp the EV trend at some point.
The problem is the current investment in EVs will have turfed out the ICE production lines and so, as you say, it will be hard to turn it back to ICE. But a perpetual supply of free raw materials to make Zero fuel anywhere must at some point be seen as better for the planet.

Lots will not buy but lots will. There was uproar when cars became turbo and pdk only. Still sold. Same with Cayenne and Macan when they first came out. I think we should buy what suits us and the manufacturers will learn to go where the market is.
When did they become turbo and PDK only? I’m on my second and fourth Caymans. First and third were turbo and manual 718s. Second and fourth both naturally aspirated and manual: One 981 GT4; one 718 GTS 4.0 delivered only a couple of months ago and just about run in.
I think the electric Cayman will be a phenomenal drive when it turns up. Range will be an issue, because it is for all EVs at the moment. Noise will matter less if it flies past any GT4 RS on the track for a few laps before it needs charging. Not saying I will buy one, but I’ll definitely want to have a “do” in one to see what it’s like. Charging will become more available, everything about the cars will get better.
You are absolutely right that they will sell. Possibly even to me as a winter hack, but only if it can do the job better than the GTS 4.0. I think that one is going to take some beating in that department. It’s a really good car, and may even get used for summer commuting instead of the GT4 at times next year.

Maybe that isn’t an exhaust trim at all, it could be a speaker - scroll through a couple of menus, select PSE (Porsche Sound Emitter), scroll down past Darracq to Lambo V10 - sorted.

Didn't seem to be an option for my GTS 4.0
. I was told they didn't sound good compared to the old 981 GT4. Got to disagree, from inside the cabin they are an absolutely brilliant sounding thing. Different, and a little quieter, granted, but just great!

I spoke with a nice chap from an OPC this morning and he interestingly stated that they are still accepting new orders for all 718s but they do put in a disclaimer that the car might not actually be made due to the new model being released in 2025.

Can clearly see the pipe is just a bit of trim with black plastic inside.
And I heard no exhaust note, just one of those spacey sounding EV noises coming from speakers.
Just watching a SavageGeese review on the 911T and they've just said the 718 GTS 4.0 is soon to be killed off like the GT4 has been.
Get one if you can folks. Plenty of new unregistered 4.0s on the Porsche approved website but God they're expensive!!
Cancelled orders perhaps?

Perhaps head over to the EV and Alternative Fuels forum and do a bit of research. You may then realise why people aren't listening to you and your massively over-simplistic thoughts on the viability of e-fuels as anything other than a niche product to keep interesting older cars on the road / greenwashing motor sport.

Pretty sure they must be cancelled orders. They tend not to make any for dealers aside from demo cars. The first couple of brand new 4.0 GTS I looked at seemed to be somewhere around list price. If there are any up for much more than list, they’ll probably be hanging around for a while. Must be a few people nervous about financial stability in the short to medium term.
Liam
porsche have just announced a 250M Euro investment in Zuffenhausen to create flexible production lines to allow ICE and EV 718 ( and 911) vehicles to be produced on same line - indicating that the death of the ICE 718 is likely further away than might have been thought.

Thanks for the replies. What are the chances of a small discount if demand dries up? We all see what's happening in the used market.
Are we subject to the the EU cybersecurity rules for new cars produced from July 2024? That would definitely stop production but it's a bit of a tightrope to walk.
I think the July 2024 rules about all new cars registered from that point being required to have an ISA system fitted is still coming in. I’d advise getting one on your drive before it’s got all that cr@p on it, which may be tricky if you want a new one and it’s not already ordered.

Couldn't agree more
I see the 718 is still listed on the configurator in Jan 2025 (which I assume means they are orderable). Maybe extended production as they non-ICE replacement looks to be a folly in the current market?
I ordered my new 718 Cayman in early December from Swindon OPC and it's due to be delivered in early April. I got told I had one of the very last allocations before the order book was closed.
Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure (especially as they've got form with the Macan) but they were absolutely adamant 718 production was stopping in mid 2025.

718.2 facelift on its way now they've rowed back from the EV nonsense. Sure they closed the order book on the 718.1
Well folks, if you wanted to order or haven't yet got a build slot then you've missed the boat. The 718 platform is no longer available to order according to the Porsche website.
If you're waiting on an allocation, I'd give your dealership a call this morning.

Anyway, end of an era. The 981 and 718 have had a good run.
Will leave a big gap now
Cheapest new ICE 2 door now 911 base which on the road is about £107k with no options at all
Will be keeping hold of my GT4 that’s for sure

The last cars will be built in October and the spec lock is in August according to the dealer I just spoke to. If you want one you need to find an unallocated slot

Doubt it. If you want a new car you want a new car. Especially a car with each individually specced. Stuff like that won’t have made any difference to a new Porsche buyer.
I had an email in the week from my local OPC declaring the end of production next month and asking me to contact them if I was interested in selling due to apparent high demand.
I won’t be selling any time soon, the 4.0 Boxster is likely to be the last N/A flat 6 cab that Porsche will make and in my opinion is the best road car they ever made. So end of an era and while certainly sad I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to buy one and enjoy it over 22k memorable miles, so far.

It would, or they’d keep making them for the UK until 2030. I wouldn’t want to give away thousands in road tax when it was a few hundred before.
There are 328 718 Caymans on AT and they’re mainly in 5 colours as folks don’t deviate very much in their spec for the common models.

It wasn't "a few hundred" before, it was £2340. It's now doubled of course.
Just making RHD cars for the UK until 2030 is hardly viable. The 718 was their lowest selling model for years at around 22k anyway. The Taycan took that dubious honour last year though.

Absolutely. I specced my car from new, partly because I couldn’t find the spec I wanted in a used 718 and partly because I wanted a new car to keep long term. It was delivered in the Spring and I have zero regrets.
Yes mine has a GPF, but nanny aids? There are none, there’s no speed limiter, speed warning or reminder etc, no lane assist interference, in fact there’s nothing aside from stop/start which is easy to turn off.
Just checking in with my thoughts.
I bought my 4.0 2 years ago and there is no chance of me selling it before I stop driving.
Everything I will ever need. Brilliant car, I could have bought a 911 but post 997 none appealed.

I grew up with minimal drivers aids.
I don’t need much tbh.
That engine and gearbox are epic for me.
I’ve been to Germany,France,Switzerland and Netherlands in it.
It can carry all our luggage for 3 weeks.
As for the “ you couldn’t afford a 911” brigade - if I could or couldn’t it’s irrelevant. I bought what I wanted and it’s great.
I also have a 986S for open top jolly japes.
Spot on, My new GT4 when i bought it in 2023 cost £114k with all the extras, road tax and full PPF
It was never about the money, always about the mid engine car, 4.0 NA engine and the handling & driving experience with the size of the car perfect for the UK roads imo.
Just like the GT4 that ended production 2 years ago they have all gone now

Each to their own, of course.
I could buy the car outright, but I’ve got zero interest in handing over £3,725 just to tax a four-cylinder 718 - or £5,105 for the 4.0 GTS.
On top of that, you’ve got all the overly intrusive driver aids that insist on switching themselves back on every time you start the car.
The only way to win this game is simply not to play.

I am in a similar position and couldn't agree more, these numbers have done me a favour and have finally put this idea to bed, I wouldn't buy a 4 cylinder and I wouldn't pay £5k+ and get nothing in return for it.
I might treat myself to a newish 6 cylinder Porsche at some point, time will tell, but there is simply no way I would pay that much new car tax, you have to stop being taken for a mug somewhere.

The only one I was considering is the GTS, according to the government website the 'Parkers £4680' is correct for both manual 247 g/km and PDK 230 g/km.
Still theft IMO, plus the extra £425 for 5 years for having had the cheek to have bought at car over £40k.

“You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).“
So perhaps not. In which case your figures are correct.

It isn’t exactly clear but what is clear is that even at the bargain £4680 it turns out it is they are taking the piss.
The figures are for the first year
For the following 5 years you need to pay £620 road tax which is £195 standard tax and then an additional £425 'luxury' car tax.

Odd isn't it, because if the retail price of the basic car was £5k more it wouldn't affect me in the same way, would probably not put me off buying one and the final price would be the same.
I bought my GT4 new in 2023 and where I live we pay vehicle emissions duty. My car was late and so it cost me £6000, when it should have been £3000. Now in 2025 it's £10,000 for an equivalent polluting car and next year it's going up up to £14,000. In France it would be 30,000 euros or thereabouts so i don't reckon you guys are to bad off with your UK road tax.
I won't be selling my car anytime soon as like you I resent paying a huge amount of tax and so the GT3 will probably never happen now. Oh well!!
But there are some wonderful legacy cars that don't carry these charges ...
It does make you think how hard it is becoming for new car manufacturers ... £40k in 2025 terms is really taking the piss for luxury car tax, is affecting most EV's now ... and really helping the Chinese brands who can easily undercut this price point ...
In fact, even though the gov. has proposed some new price subsidies for EV's the Chinese are already offering price reductions to compete ... hence avoiding any uncertainty as to what a purchaser will pay whilst taking advantage of the current gov. subsidy uncertainty.
What a load of rubbish this is ... how can gov. be so lacking in joined up thinking ?

If the retail price goes up by £5k, the resale value should also rise by a proportionate amount.
But with road tax, whatever you pay is gone for good, it’s basically an instant hit of depreciation.

I know - that’s why I used the word proportionate (though maybe relative would have been clearer).
And just to clarify, I was referring to the retail price itself, not the optional extras.

The problem is what is the alternative? Either you want a new Porsche (or any other car similar) and be able to spec it how you want or you bite your nose off to spite you’re face and buy something used which isn’t exactly what you want to avoid paying. If you are alive you are paying tax it’s a fact of life. Sure, minimise tax and be efficient with it but when it comes to actually impacting in such a way one would rather forget what they really want to avoid it you have to ask if that’s really sensible.
If you buy something like that new every year or more often than that then a tax of 5% may lessen that addiction but if you’re buying every 3-4 years?
Maybe I'm missing something here but surely the amount of tax you pay for a new car is irrelevant if the car retains a high residual % further down the line. For example, my Boxster will shortly be 4 years old and similar examples are selling for around 80-85% of what I paid for it new. Not bad when you think about it especially as mentioned above I've enjoyed every minute of driving it all over Europe.
But is the amount it has depreciated by accounted for by all of the tax I paid and some of the actual cost of the car or proportion of both. And what about VAT, do you strip that out of the equation as well or do you just accept that the price is the price and if you want it that is the price you'll pay, move on and enjoy it while you can.
You could of course buy second hand but if buying from a dealer you're still paying tax indirectly to support their overheads which may include VAT, Corporation Tax, Income Tax etc. Then when you buy a car and you put fuel into it are you going to avoid paying duty on that or the duty on the Insurance premium or do you just pay because there is no other (legal) option.
Of course this could all get very depressing very quickly and we could all go down the pub and drown our sorrows but I suspect even that might be a difficult decision to make for some people, water anyone?

You do make good points Voodoo. Objectively it’s not as big a deal to pay it as it perhaps feels to the prospective purchaser. I’m consider myself someone who can’t afford to be buying a brand new Porsche every 3 years (despite having 4 cars). Perhaps it’s a protective mechanism to stop myself falling into a trap of this tax or taking out finance etc.
I do recall looking at the high retained value of used 911s when I was in the market and using this as part of my reasoning for buying a new one in 2017. To be fair I can’t recall what the initial tax was, but I think it was the same as year 2 ie a few hundred quid (the tax plus the 5 years of high value tax).
Are we past the zenith of ICEs though? What I mean by that is; are the new cars sufficiently better that were justified upgrading. I would say no for the base 911 as the engine in the 992.2 is the same as for the 991.2. For marketing we were told that it now had GTS turbos. That’s great but the power is only a fraction up, with no more torque and the car is heavier. Overall, there is less of a pull to own the latest new shiny thing.
I thought about upgrading my 911 and for less money (53K) than the upgrade I have bought an R8 V10. For me the value for money with this ‘new’ shiny thing in my garage is impressive and the engine is something that only exists in a handful of new cars now.
Still, despite my thoughts above, I do get that a 718 is still a great car and if only new would do, I’d rather buy one of these than most of the other stuff on the market these days. Plus, we do need to pay more tax, so I guess it’s either driven through in stealth taxes, or we pay more income tax (again).
Why do WE NEED TO PAY MORE TAX ???? If this effing government stopped giving it all away to illegal immigrants and society's spongers, we could be paying LESS.

Save it for NP&E
Can we get back to discussing cars now
We need to pay much less tax and focus instead on massively cutting spending. Unfortunately with the hardcore lefties in control instead we’ll revert to the 70s..
I do fundamentally object to paying tax and will minimise to the maximum extent possible.
The whole net zero climate scam needs reversing also.

Obesity, alcohol, smoking, vaping, car accidents and many other things individually cost the county far more money than illegal immigration… yes it’s a big problem but it’s a drop in the ocean when compared to the things that are actually costing tax payer. Unfortunately you can’t say this as nobody will vote for you.
It doesn’t matter what happens, the wheels turn, the general public, regardless of skin colour, ethnicity or gender have such a large percentage who abuse their bodies, litter, fly tip and do many other “minor” things that barely get a mention. The continuation of the standard lifestyle of many is what stops things improving and keeps the tax ramping up. All the figures are available online.
I bought a 718 a few months ago and I love it. With the prices of the Taycan dropping I’m getting very tempted with one as a second car.
I’m not for or against EV’s, I don’t really care about the noise, I just like driving and performance. I’ve never even been in an EV, let alone driven one.
Expectations are so Incredibly low for the new Cayman and knowing Porsche it’s going be something special. I’m really hoping it’s bad as I’d love to lose nothing over a few years on my GT4, I just can’t see it happening.
I also have no regrets about buying my 718 new back in March.
Yes I paid the annoying road tax, but thankfully I got in before the big rise in April (and also the ~8% Porsche RRP increase) and will continue to pay the extra tax so for the next 5 years. Whilst I think it’s all b
ks, mine is strictly a daily driver so it’s going to get driven (a lot) and there’s also nothing else available that comes close to what I want for a daily. I value the handling, the performance, the practicality, the fact it has no annoying driver aids and also the fact it has actual buttons for the infotainment and HVAC controls.
I also couldn’t find the spec I wanted, so I elected to buy new. Is it a lot of money for a daily? To me, yes. Is it worthwhile despite the tax? Absolutely yes, I spec’d the car exactly as I wanted and I intend to keep it until I’ve retired which will be in 12~15 years time and the car will be on well over 100k miles. Picking it up and knowing it’s mine from new was great and, like stamp duty on a forever house, I’ve written the tax off in my head as an inevitable enabler to me getting what I want as a long term daily driver.

It looks great in that colour. ‘Stamp duty’ thankfully that’s one I’d forgotten about (until now!)
My Spyder RS has just landed in the UK, next stop the dealer
Feels an age since I ordered it back in March!!
The extra tax is annoying but was it going to stop me buying the car? No chance
I was in Perth OPC this afternoon they have a lovely new Aventurine Green Cayman GTS 4.0L in the showroom if anyone is looking for one.
