Driving around at 100mph I noticed that my RPMs were at 4,000 in sixth gear. This seems a little high and I was wondering if I could really reach the top speed in 6th gear (due to gearing). It seems as though I'd run out of RPMs.
Another Question: How do you all downshift shift for maximum power? I was once told (as a general rule) that you can downshift to the gear that is 'half your speed'. Example: If you're traveling at 60mph, then it is safe to down shift to 3rd gear (3 X 2 = 6 => 60). 80mph = 4th gear, 100mph = 5th gear, etc.
What rule do you all use?
Shane
PS. I need to search for gear ratios and assigned max speeds per gear.
Okay,
Searched and found the gear ratios, but, I wanted to find the top speed in each gear. Anyone know?

Helo,
Not to worry, I don't think you'll run out of RPMs getting to top speed. I've got a picture of my gauges where I'm going 132 mph and only showing 5400 RPM.
Usually, there's a diagram in the back of the
Porsche
owner's manual, that shows maximum speeds up to redline in each gear. I haven't checked in my
Cayman
manual, but it's been in the back of all five
911s
I've had.
The way I've figured out when to downshift to stay in the power band was to just drive the car and get used to where the tach is at which speeds. Your rule of thumb might work, but seat time will tell you more, I think.

i have a diagramm of the gears incl. Rpm and kmh.
while its in German, you can still get all the info from this graph: (vertical axis are the kmh, horizontal axis are the rpm...
You'll hit an aerodynamic stop before you run out of RPMs, I was up in the 6Ks in 6th gear yesterday and the accel is VERY slow. Probably need 5 miles of road to hit the advertised max of 171. (My GPS reported 151 mph.)
This diagram is from the back of the owner's manual:
I have taken the diagram and imposed the relative aproximate maximum speeds in each gear:
Hope this helps... looks like to me the maximum speed of 171 mph is slightly off the graphic.

Thanks everyone!. By looking at your graph, you only show 5 conversions. Which gear did you NOT show the top speed for? 1st or 6th?
Shane
top speed in 1st is on the graph @ 45mph - for some reason they don't extend the graph far enough to hit top speed in 6th - the graph also shows time in seconds along the bottom and you can see that, like hubble15 has noted in the real world above, the line flattens out considerably after 150 mph

Thanks for the info!
