Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got a pre-'05 hardtop. I bought it last year and took it apart for painting. When I re-assembled it, I bought all of the anti-squeak pads/weatherstrip. I put them all on except for big foam pads that go around the spin locks. The pictures in the Service Bulleting are a big vague. If anybody has these on their hardtop and hasn't put it on the car yet, could you please take a picture or two to show how and where they are installed? I'd like to put them on before it gets cold. Here's what the pad looks like off the car:

POST 2Original post

Is that foam supposed to go in the hardtop or between the car and the hardtop? I have had my hardtop on for two years now, and have read a lot about 986 hardtops, and I have never heard of anyone placing foam between the hardtop and the car. It seems unnecessary to begin with, and is certainly not OEM as far as I am aware.

POST 3Original post

I agree with Rick3000. I do not have a part like that either. I can only guess that maybe it crams into the space around the spinlocks to provide some noise insulation. The driver's side would have to fit around the defroster connector. There is a hard plastic part on the top near the rear "corner." Not sure what - if anything - might be under that as I've not seen a top disassembled.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's exactly where it goes. It goes on the top, on the inside. It is to cut down on wind noise in that area. Thanks for checking though.
