They also claim these items are a lot tougher than standard as they are normally used for racing.

Personally I think it would be a real shame if impecunious types like me were prevented in future from running 996s in the same way as 993s because the cost is so high.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6K!!
Hope you get some helpful answers. Another example of a 996 being much less of a long-term ownership prospect than a 993 or earlier?

You guys. Any opportunity to rubbish the 996. The 993 is of course the most reliable piece of machinery ever built in the world, never has faults, never goes wrong.

This lot were featured in one of the Porsche mags a few months ago, and look what I found...

I think there's a thread started by Scouser - he found a firm in Belgium that could rebuild a 996 box with OE parts. It was posted around Christmas time, if that helps. At one time Berny was going to drive over for the business, but I'm not sure of the outcome...

Steady Freddie! I'm not at all against 996s - in fact I'd like to own one some day.
But there are signs that Porsche is just not as keen as it was on making available the bits to keep older cars going. And the solution may not be independent service specialists either, because either stuff can't be repaired or the volumes are too small for economic spares manufacture. See an article by Peter Morgan in 911&PW a few months ago.
Personally I think it would be a real shame if impecunious types like me were prevented in future from running 996s in the same way as 993s because the cost is so high. And it'll be bad news depreciation-wise as well.

Try contacting the below:
Wrightune at Wallingford near Henley.
http://www.wrightune.co.uk
I was over there yesterday talking about 996 gearboxes and the owner, Tony, thinks he may be able to either fully or at least partly rebuild 996 gearboxes...its worth a go and I can thoroughly recommend them for service (no, I'm not related to them)

996_chap,
Go to
www.design911.co.uk
- look in their 'transmission' section under 'gearbox rebuild service'. You will see they sell a full set of bearings and seals for the 996 'box for £1250 + VAT. They also claim these items are a lot tougher than standard as they are normally used for racing. A good specialist should be able to install them and you'll have a 'new' gearbox for £2-2500
Option 2 would be to contact Tech-9 (of GT-Series racing fame). They got me a nice used 'box for my last Porker (a '99 C4) for £2500. This was before the ad referred to above appeared
Hope this helps
