I think that £25k for left-hooker with a questionable RMS problem is way too pricey...early £20k's for this car AND only if its in good nick....you can pick up right-hand drive 996's of that vintage for £27 from specialist dealers now...see the links below:
Leading evidence: 'way too pricey...early £20k's' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'way too pricey...early £20k's' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey folks,
I was offered a LHD 1999 996 C2 at the weekend at what seemed like a very good price of £25k (too good?? :? ). I had only really concentrated my 911 searches on 993's so far, but, given that any 911 that I buy is likely to be my main car (racking up about 12k miles a year), then a 996 might well be a more practical purchase.
Now, I've heard lots about the fabled 996 RMS issue. Apparently this particular car has not shown any sign of RMS problems during it's 55k miles and has FPSH. The question is, is RMS failure an inevitability or down to luck of the fraw? Does the fact that this car had been ok to date mean it's a good'un and will be fine for another 55k, or do they all go at some point and so this one is probably 'due'?
Any thoughts?
James

I'd say mainly luck of fraw (sic
). 55K and no RMS trouble is a v good omen.
But how detailed is the FPSH you've got access to? Could it have had an RMS done but the fact gone 'unrecorded'?

My fraws can be very lucky!
Going to go and see if I can peruse the service history later in the week. Is there any way to tell if the car has been RMS'd other than oil sprayed all over the engine bay?!

What i have noticed is that 993 prices in both Ch and the rest of europe seems to have taken a bit of a pounding recently - is that due to the 997 do ya reackon ?
I am being offered quite a bit less than i paid just over a year ago.

James,
Are you looking for a LHD car only?
I have a wonderful 95' 993 C2 for sale in Iris Blue.
JZ Machtech know the car very well and it has had thousands spent on it, renewing suspension (Rook) and putting right bodywork. Details can be found on the Porsche Club website under members cars. Alternatively, I can send you pictures and a detailed description to your email address.
Warren, early 993 prices have noticably dropped and I just posted a thread on PCGB on exactly that subject!....

In fact, seeing as you're in Rugby, Autobahn have a decent looking C2 coupe for £27500.....
Try not to buy the first car you see!!

Thanks Marc, the left-hooker I looked at has no history of RMS trouble at all, my question is whether they all get it eventually and this one is 'due' or whether there are good ones and bad ones and this seems to be a good one?
The car is in excellent condition, good colour combo, with some good options and reasonable mileage (actually 47k not 55k as stated earlier). I was thinking of 'going in' with a £22k offer and hoping to end up somewhere around the mid-23's with the stipulation that it flies a PPI with no major work needed.
I'm a regular visitor to Autobahn, and have had a nose around that 996. I'm not a big fan of Zenith Blue but it is in good nick.

I have never owned a porsche but am looking at a 2000 996. I understand that there was a engin crack problem with 996. Is this correct and what does RMS mean?
Thanks
Ajay
